Synopsis (short abstract) Les récents changements survenus sur les marchés agricoles mondiaux des aliments de base ont fait craindre un retour possible d’un autre cycle de prix élevés. Cependant, en général, les difficultés auxquelles sont actuellement confrontés les marchés diffèrent de celles survenues lors de la hausse des prix des aliments de 2007/08. L’indice FAO des prix des produits alimentaires, indicateur de la variation des prix internationaux d’un panier de produits alimentaires composé de céréales, de graines oléagineuses, de produits laitiers, de viande et de sucre, n’a fait qu’augmenter depuis août 2009 et cette tendance se vérifie pour presque tous ses composants. En novembre, l’indice a atteint en moyenne 168 points, niveau le plus haut depuis septembre 2008, mais toujours 21 pour cent moins élevé que le sommet atteint en juin 2008. Avant les pointes enregistrées en 2007/08, l’indice des prix n’avait jamais dépassé 120 points et se situait la plupart du temps sous les 100 point s.

    Between 2 and 17 January 2024, following a request by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoA&F), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in close cooperation with the Food Security Technical Secretariat (FSTS) and the State Ministries of Agriculture, carried out its annual Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) to estimate the 2023 crop production and assess the food supply situation throughout the 18 states of the country. The report's recommendations are to provide immediate response to the needs of the population most affected by acute food insecurity as well as to support the recovery of the agriculture sector, increasing food production and farmers’ incomes, and enhancing efficiency along the value chain to reduce production costs.

    Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum

    This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.
