No results found.This document contains the Report and papers presented at the Regional Workshop on Networking for Improved Access to Fisheries and Aquaculture Information in Africa, which was held in Grahamstown, South Africa, from 3 to 7 November 2003. Eighteen participants from Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Seychelles and South Africa attended the Workshop and presented papers. Fisheries library networking activities were reviewed as a basis for planning future collaboration to improve ac cess to fisheries information and to promote information resources sharing. The summary of priority issues includes improved dissemination of African fisheries publications, full-text online fisheries journals, open source software, network focal points, the use of standard methodologies to enhance information exchange and technology for document delivery. The long-term goal of the network is to strengthen the information capacity at national fisheries institutions in Africa. -

A total of 47 delegates from 29 member countries and 3 observers participated in the 18th ordinary session. The session covered the main topics of : Follow-up of the intersessional activities on the decisions and recommendations of the 17th session; sustainability of aquaculture production (profitability and socio-economic considerations); the voluntary guidelines to ensure Sustainability of Artisanal Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and poverty eradication (SSF Guidelines) and Inland fisheries and Aquaculture; Fish diseases and environmental constraints, Sharing of experiences in sustainable development of inland fisheries and aquaculture in West Africa - Challenges in the ECOWAS region. Le présent document est le rapport de la dix-huitième session du Comité des pêches continentales et de l'aquaculture pour l’Afrique (CPCAA), tenue à Bamako, Mali, du 26 au 28 novembre 2019. Au total, 47 délégués de 29 pays membres et 3 observateurs ont participé à la Dix-huitième session ordinaire. Les principaux thèmes de la session ont porté sur: le suivi des activités intersessions sur les décisions et recommandations de la Dix-septième session; la durabilité de la production aquacole (rentabilité et considérations socio-économiques); les directives volontaires pour assurer la durabilité de la pêche artisanale dans le contexte de la sécurité alimentaire et de l'éradication de la pauvreté (directives SSF) et la pêche continentale et l'aquaculture; les maladies des poissons et contraintes environnementales, le partage d’expériences en développement durable des pêches continentales et aquaculture en Afrique de l’ouest - défis dans la zone CEDEAO. -

No results found.The purpose of the regional workshop on climate change, disasters and crises in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in West and Central Africa was to contribute to a process that is currently underway to determine the gaps in adaptation and disaster risk management strategies, policies and activities that aim to assist fishers, fish farmers, fish workers and the communities they live in to improve their resilience to the impacts of disasters and climate change, and to identify areas to address these gaps based on the experience of the participants. The workshop was the first of two; the second will focus on Southern and Eastern Africa. Together they form part of the consultative process of Component C of the NEPAD-FAO Fish Programme (NFFP). The workshop addressed three main questions in respect to the fisheries and aquaculture sector and the impacts of disasters and climate change: (i) what are the impacts on and the vulnerabilities of the sector, (ii) how has the sector adapted and w hat can we learn from this, and (iii) what else can be done (and how) to reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience? The workshop recommended adaptation actions at local, national and regional levels based on practical experiences and examples of actions that have worked or not in the past. The workshop outputs will be used to complement the mapping and gap-analysis paper towards a work plan for Component C of the NEPAD-FAO Fish Programme (NFFP).The combined findings of this workshop, the forthcoming workshop for Southern and Eastern Africa and the mapping and gap analysis will be well placed to feed into the pan African process of elaborating a comprehensive fisheries reform strategy and ensuring that climate change and disaster impacts are addressed for the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

2012The thirtieth session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) was held in Rome, Italy, from 9 to 13 July 2012. The Committee reviewed the issues of an international character and the FAO programme in fisheries and aquaculture, and their implementation. The Committee, while stressing the high value of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture as a flagship publication, recommended that FAO should provide more support to countries in data collection and quality control, as well as consider a si mpler classification of stock status. The Committee expressed strong support for the standards and norms of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its related instruments and agreed on further effort to facilitate their accessibility and more effective implementation. The Committee agreed on the development of best practice guidelines for traceability. The Committee reiterated its support to FAO’s collaboration with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the World Trade Organization. The Committee reiterated the request for additional assistance for aquaculture development in Africa and Small Island Developing States. The Committee requested FAO to develop a conformity assessment framework for aquaculture certification guidelines as well as a draft strategy paper including a long-term strategic plan for the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and emphasized the specific needs for future work. The Committee urged FAO to reinforce it s emphasis on fish as food, ensure that these aspects were not lost in the global and regional frameworks for ocean conservation and management, and assert its leading role in fisheries and aquaculture in ocean governance. The Committee requested FAO to address the issue of hydrocarbon deposits in the oceans and assess possible threats arising from their development. The Committee called for continuous consultation with all stakeholders in the development of the International Guidelines for Secu ring Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries and agreed on the need to develop implementation strategies for the Guidelines. The Committee agreed that illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing continues to be a persistent and pressing problem adversely impacting on sustainable fisheries and food security. The Committee endorsed the terms of reference for the Ad hoc Working Group for the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures. The Committee requested to convene the second resumed session of the te chnical consultation on the draft Criteria for Flag State Performance. The Committee reiterated its support for the Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels. The Committee agreed that FAO should focus on challenges relevant to its core mandate and must join efforts with partners in better coordination and urged FAO to ensure that fisheries and aquaculture priorities were reflected under the Strategic Objectives. The Committee adopted the revised Rules o f Procedure and endorsed the related changes in current practice. The Committee also approved the Multiyear Programme of Work (MYPOW) 2012–2015. -
