Book (stand-alone)FlagshipEl estado mundial de la agricultura y la alimentación 2015 (SOFA): La protección social y la agricultura: romper el ciclo de la pobreza rural 2015A pesar de los importantes avances realizados en el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio sobre la pobreza y el hambre, casi mil millones de personas aún viven en situación de extrema pobreza (menos de 1,25 dólares por persona al día) y 795 millones siguen sufriendo hambre crónica. Habrá que hacer mucho más para alcanzar los nuevos Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible sobre la erradicación de la pobreza y el hambre para el año 2030. La mayor parte de las poblaciones en situación de extrema pobreza vive en zonas rurales de países en desarrollo y depende de la agricultura para su subsistencia. Son tan pobres y están tan malnutridos que sus familias viven en un círculo de pobreza que se transmite de generación en generación. Muchos países en desarrollo están adoptando una nueva estrategia exitosa para romper el ciclo de la pobreza rural: combinar la protección social y el desarrollo agrícola. Las medidas de protección social, como las prestaciones monetarias para las viuda s y los huérfanos y el empleo garantizado para las personas pobres en el marco de los programas de obras públicas, pueden evitar a las personas vulnerables las peores carencias. Pueden permitir a los hogares la mejora o la diversificación de sus dietas. También pueden ayudarles a ahorrar e invertir en sus propias fincas o a emprender nuevas actividades. Los programas de desarrollo agrícola que respaldan las explotaciones familiares en pequeña escala en cuanto al acceso al mercado y la gestión de los riesgos pueden crear oportunidades de empleo y lograr que estas familias sean más autónomas y tengan una mayor resiliencia. La protección social y el desarrollo agrícola, combinados, pueden romper el ciclo de la pobreza rural.

Si no se toman con urgencia medidas para que la agricultura aumente su sostenibilidad, productividad y resiliencia, los efectos del cambio climático comprometerán seriamente la producción de alimentos en los países y las regiones que ya sufren una gran inseguridad alimentaria. El Acuerdo de París, adoptado en diciembre de 2015, representa un nuevo principio en el esfuerzo mundial por estabilizar el clima antes de que sea demasiado tarde. En él se reconoce la importancia de la seguridad alime ntaria en la respuesta internacional al cambio climático, como queda reflejado en el hecho de que muchos países sitúen en un lugar destacado el sector de la agricultura en sus contribuciones previstas para la adaptación y la mitigación. Para ayudar a poner en práctica tales planes, en este informe se señalan las estrategias, las oportunidades de financiación y las necesidades de datos e información correspondientes. También se describen las políticas y las instituciones transformadoras que puede n superar los obstáculos para su realización.

No results found.The purpose of this manual is to give the reader a foundation of practical knowledge regarding all aspects of Pacific oyster cultivation. It is targeted at new entrants to the market wishing to establish a farm, and existing operators who wish to develop their farms and explore new cultivation techniques. The methodologies described can be applied both to low-tech, low budget, small-scale farming operations and to high-tech, big budget, industrial-scale aquaculture production enterprises. This guide focuses on the functional expertise and technical equipment required to construct and manage an operational farm in the diverse environmental and physical locations in which they can be situated, from the initial stages of finding and selecting a suitable site, to the conclusion of the first production cycle and harvesting the crop. The manual contains a brief introduction which describes the relevance of the species with regards to global aquaculture production figures and how it can form an important part of future food production strategies. Chapter 2 describes the anatomy and biology of Crassostrea gigas and gives an indication as to the environmental conditions in which the species thrives as well as the pathologies and predators that can result in poor health leading to potential mortalities. Chapter 3 deals with all aspects of undertaking a survey of potential oyster farming sites and what data should be collected and examined to assess a site’s suitability, but also which areas are best suited to different cultivation techniques. After this, Chapter 4 introduces the main farming techniques that will be described in detail in the following chapters, which includes off-bottom cultivation, on-bottom cultivation, and suspended cultivation, and gives details of some of the most common cultivation equipment necessary to undertake these operations. The techniques and strategies necessary to procure seed oysters and how to develop them through the nursery stage are also introduced. This includes the basic principles of upwelling, which then leads into Chapter 5, which provides a detailed description of how to build and operate one particular example of a Floating Upwelling System (Flupsy) which is suitable for use in remote but sheltered conditions. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 constitute the main body of the manual and provide an in-depth look into the three major cultivation techniques that this guide concentrates on: “Farming with trestles and bags in the intertidal zone”, “On-bottom cultivation in the intertidal or subtidal zone” and “Offshore longline cultivation”. -
