This report presents the results of the implementation of the GBEP indicators in Paraguay, where the project was executed under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG). The application of the GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy to the two priority bioenergy pathways identified in Paraguay – forest biomass for energy, at both household and industrial levels, and ethanol from maize and sugarcane - was entrusted to a team of experts from three leading national Centers of excellence: The Asociación de Docentes Investigadores de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias de la UNA (ADIFCA), which took the lead on the environmental indicators; the Centro de Estudios Ambientales y Sociales (CEAMSO), which had the primary responsibility over the social indicators; and the Universidad Católica Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (UCA), which led the measurement of the economic indicators. The project provided Paraguay with an understanding of how to establish the means of a long-term, periodic monitoring of its domestic bioenergy sector based on the GBEP indicators. Such periodic monitoring would enhance the knowledge and understanding of this sector and more generally of the way in which the contribution of the agricultural and energy sectors to national sustainable development could be evaluated.

    Paraguay: Appeal for funds
Emergency response, livelihoods recovery for drought‑affected smallholders and preparedness for future shocks in the Chaco region

Paraguay is facing extreme drought, which is particularly critical in the Chaco region – the country’s largest, least populated, most remote and arid region, characterized by limited rainfall, sandy eroded soils and desert temperatures – due to the “triple episode” of the La Niña phenomenon. Severe rainfall deficit is exacerbating the humanitarian situation and affecting populations' food security and livelihoods, particularly of Indigenous People as well as of the rest of the population that depends on agriculture for food and income. An alarming increase in the level of malnutrition also continues to impact already vulnerable families. The response of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims at restoring the livelihoods of rural households affected by the prolonged drought, as well as rehabilitating water infrastructures, while strengthening anticipatory actions and climate-resilient measures in collaboration with local and municipal actors. The intervention prioritizes the most affected communities in the targeted region, namely Indigenous Peoples and women.

    2002
    Also available in:

Latin America and the Caribbean - Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2023
    Statistics and trends
    2023
    Also available in:

The 2023 edition of the Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean presents an update of the data and trends in food security and nutrition in recent years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the economic slowdown, rising food inflation and income inequality have had an impact on regional figures. The most recent data shows that, between 2021 and 2022, progress was made in reducing hunger and food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the progress achieved is far from the targets established to meet SDG 2 of ending hunger. In addition, one in five people in the region cannot access a healthy diet and malnutrition in all its forms, including child stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity continue to be a major challenge.
