    The Asia-Pacific region, despite impressive economic growth, is home to 490 million people still suffering from chronic hunger and it accounts for 62 percent of undernourished people in the world. Other trends and topics that need to be taken into account include population growth, urbanization and change of dietary patterns, issues of malnutrition and food safety, climate change and disaster risk, and unsustainable production and environmental degradation. Therefore, in order to achieve FAO’s mandate related to SDG Goals, there is a need for placing sustainable agriculture and food systems in the center of the agenda applying the five principles of sustainable food and agriculture. In this regard, FAO plans to undertake to support member states in achieving SDGs through five Regional Initiatives in 2018-19, notably Zero Hunger, Blue Growth, Climate Change, One Health, and the Inter-regional Initiative on SIDS for the Pacific, which obtained endorsement at the 40th Session of the FAO Conference in July 2017.

    The need for adaptation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector and the associated challenges are expected to increase with climate change. This has been stated with a very high degree of confidence by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC AR5). The Report also refers to the complexity of adaptation in the description of nine constraining factors, and laying down ten overlapping approaches for managing the risks of climate change through adaptation. T his document reviews the numerous options for aquaculture described in sector literature; it identifies key research areas that would improve the sector’s capacity to adapt to climate change impacts and inform policy on adaptation. The document ends with a set of suggestions for assessing potential adaptation measures and implementing them. These are built around two pillars: a sustainable livelihood framework, and an ecosystems approach to aquaculture management, supported by risk assessment an d management along the value chain and a feasibility assessment.     Fisheries and aquaculture is a sector of special importance to food security, nutrition and livelihood in the Asia-Pacific Region, which can be significantly impacted by climate changes and related disaster risks. Effectively addressing climate change impacts and managing disaster risks in fisheries and aquaculture sector are vitally important to building resilience of the sector for sustained and greater contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to ending hunger, poverty eradication and sustainable use of natural resources. FAO member countries in the region have been making good effort and significant progress in addressing climate change impacts and related disaster risks with support of international communities. A FAO regional consultative workshop was convened to bring together a wide range of players including country governments, regional organizations and other partners to share their knowledge and good practices in addressing climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture in the region, to assess the progress made in addressing issues with marine capture fisheries, inland capture fisheries, coastal aquaculture and inland aquaculture in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation in implementing the national plan of actions for addressing climate change in fisheries and aquaculture, and to recommend strategies for addressing institutional and capacity gaps in building climate-resilience fisheries and aquaculture industry in the region. The publication is the compilation of the workshop executive report, background technical papers, extended summary of presentations by representatives from participating government and FAO partners, and the workshop conclusions and recommendations.
