    This Policy Brief is one in a series led by Chulalongkorn University (CU) with support from the Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC), Ministry of Education, Thailand, in partnership with FAO. The series was initiated to support the ASEAN Work-Plan on Education (AWPE), 2016-2020 implementation while Thailand was Chair of ASEAN in 2019 under the theme: “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability.” The Briefs offer critical interdisciplinary perspectives on agri-food systems from social and sustainability sciences. They are fully aligned with the regional initiative on Food System Transformation and are meant to support the work engaged with ASEAN. The first brief focuses on the potential of Higher Education Institutions in South East Asia to contribute to more sustainable agri-food systems. It highlights the need for better documentation and evaluations of tertiary agricultural education, research and extension data and impacts to properly monitor and assess SDG progress. It advocates for strengthened universities encouraging critical thinking, teaching and multi-disciplinary research on Sustainable Agriculture concepts, practices and SDGs helping students, government decision-makers and farmers to make practical choices based on reliable evidence.

    This policy brief is one in a series led by Chulalongkorn University with support from the Office of the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education, Thailand, in partnership with FAO. The series was initiated to support the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Work Plan on Education, 2016–2020 implementation while Thailand was Chair of ASEAN in 2019 under the theme: “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability.” The Briefs offer critical interdisciplinary perspectives on agri-food systems from social and sustainability sciences. They are fully aligned with the regional initiative on Food System Transformation and are meant to support the work engaged with ASEAN. This brief focuses on the recent efforts that have aimed at documenting, analysing and supporting sustainable agri-food systems among Southeast Asian universities and colleges while achieving the SDGs through regional cooperation. It advocates that with greater support for institutional reforms based on five pillars – curricula, research, extension, policies, and sustainability assessments/reporting – more HEIs could collaborate with FAO and other agencies, regional organizations, governments and donors to scale-up AE innovations and alternatives.

    The project's third phase, which took place in Guatemala, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda, aimed to adopt and implement agrifood system development policies, strategies and programmes. These initiatives focused on youth and were sensitive to both gender and decent work. They intended to generate knowledge, raise awareness on youth emplyment programmes, and develop stakeholder capacity and interinstitutional coordination in the agrifood system. The project also focused on strengthening FAO tools and internal capacity to promote gender-sensistive youth emplyment, foster regional and global knowledge sharing and partnerships, and support youth beneficiaries in coping with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
