    In this issue, we look plans underway for the launch of a new Global Soil Partnership, an ambitious attempt to support a global effort to work on common issues related to soil management. We also examine a regional project focused on assisting four Andean countries - Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador – with issues of climate change adaptation and disaster risk management in the agricultural sector. Finally, we invite you to participate in an online conference addressing issues related to polic ies and practices of water allocation in Asia, with a special focus on agriculture.

    In this issue, we look at a new publication entitled â¿¿Payments for ecosystem services and food securityâ¿¿. This document was produced as part of preparatory process for FAOâ¿¿s participation in the Rio+20 event to be held in 2012. We also look ahead to World Water Week to be held 21-27 August in Stockholm, Sweden, where FAO will participate in a seminar anticipating the theme of 2012â¿¿s World Water Day â¿¿ Water and Food Security. Finally, with the Thirteenth Regular Session of the C ommission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture held at FAO Headquarters in July, we introduce some of the key areas where preserving biodiversity is essential to achieving food security.

    Methods for evaluating nutrient status in order to obtain better plant growth and increased yield are constantly being developed and improved. New analytical techniques and procedures for soil and plant analysis have been invented and tested in many countries and laboratories. There have been innovations in data processing leading to preparation of more refined and specific fertilizer recommendations. The purpose of the Consultation was: i. to review advances in a) methodologies for soil and plant chemical analysis, and b) interpretation of the results obtained and the preparation of fertilizer recommendations based on these results. ii. to identify progress made and areas requiring further attention with regard to the organization of soil testing services in general and, in particular, in developing countries.

    This report illustrates the food loss assessment studies undertaken along the maize, sunflower and beans supply chains in Uganda in 2015-16 and 2016-17. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste.

    This edition of The State of the World’s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture presents objective and comprehensive information and analyses on the current state, trends and challenges facing two of the most important agricultural production factors: land and water. Land and water resources are central to agriculture and rural development, and are intrinsically linked to global challenges of food insecurity and poverty, climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as d egradation and depletion of natural resources that affect the livelihoods of millions of rural people across the world. Current projections indicate that world population will increase from 6.9 billion people today to 9.1 billion in 2050. In addition, economic progress, notably in the emerging countries, translates into increased demand for food and diversified diets. World food demand will surge as a result, and it is projected that food production will increase by 70 percent in t he world and by 100 percent in the developing countries. Yet both land and water resources, the basis of our food production, are finite and already under heavy stress, and future agricultural production will need to be more productive and more sustainable at the same time.

    The African workshop was one of three regional consultative workshops carried out as a follow-up to the 2009 inception workshop of the FAO Extra-Budgetary Programme on Fisheries and Aquaculture for Poverty Alleviation and Food Security. The workshops built on the outcomes of the Global Conference on Small-Scale Fisheries held in Bangkok in October 2008 and referred to the recommendations made by the 26th Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in March 2009 with regard to the potential development of an international instrument and programme for small-scale fisheries. The purpose of the workshops was to provide guidance on the scope and contents of such an international small-scale fisheries instrument and on the possible priorities and implementation modalities for a global assistance programme. It was organised around plenary presentations on key subjects and working group discussions. The workshop agreed that an international instrument on small-scale fisheries and a rela ted programme would be important tools for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries. It recommended that a small-scale fisheries international instrument and assistance programme should be informed by human rights principles and existing instruments relevant to good governance and sustainable development, comprise the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) as a guiding principle for resource management and development and incorporate Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Climate Change Adaption (C CA) as an integral part considering that DRM is a continuum process, before, during and after a disaster. The workshop recognised the value and worldwide acceptance of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and strongly felt that a small-scale fisheries instrument should be closely aligned to the Code. The instrument should build on what already exists and use a similar language to the Code. In developing the instrument, reference should be made not only to States but also to other sta keholders, recognizing the shared responsibility with regard to resource sustainability and livelihood security. Local, national and regional ownership should be ensured. Implementation aspects should be considered already at the design stage, including the need for technical guidance and supportive mechanisms. Results monitoring should be based on well-defined impact indicators and be an integral part of the implementation modalities.
