Synopsis (short abstract) Equines, in particular horses and donkeys, play a critical role in the livelihood and resilience of poor rural communities in Africa by providing transportation and draught power for farming They are a significant source of revenue for their owners According to FAO, there are 13 7 million donkeys in sub Saharan Africa, with the majority living in Sahel countries A number of countries in West and Central Africa have reported anomalous rates of death among donkeys and horses since November 2018 and into 2019 The equine influenza, African horse sickness ( strangles, or a combination of infections in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, the Niger, Nigeria and Senegal were identified as the primary causes of these high losses among equine populations The infestations pose a threat to other neighbouring countries because of the high contagiousness of the diseases and practices that could foster their spread, such as frequent border crossings of animals, an extensive networks of husbandry and non disposal of carcasses Rapid containment and management of the diseases at the national and regional levels require urgent responses and suitable initiatives.

    Agriculture is the most crucial sector of the economies of West African countries, as it ensures the food and nutrition security of millions of people. As part of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), adopted in 2003, African heads of state and of government committed to dedicating at least 10 percent of their budgets to agriculture. In this context, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2005 drafted its agricultural policy (ECOWAP), which was aimed at encouraging its member states and supporting them in orienting their commercial and macro economic policies towards the acceleration of agricultural development and the reduction of poverty in the region. The project was designed to support the implementation of the CAADP/ECOWAP, both at regional level, through capacity building for ECOWAS in terms of investment programme /project design and management and resource mobilization, and at national level, with support for the operationalization of the National Agriculture Investment Programme (NAIPs) of selected countries.

    Development strategy during the 1960 and 1970s was based on the philosophy that developing countries lacked improved technology and capital for speeding up their development.' Industrialization was promoted in order to capitalize on the abundant fish resources. However, the anticipated expansion of the economy did not happen and the development approach shifted towards an integrated rural strategy where emphasis is put on the community as a whole to upgrade incomes and the quality of lif e through technical assistance and the active participation of fisher folk and the community.

    The workshop was conducted to draw attention to the state of knowledge related to gender roles and issues in the artisanal fisheries sector in the region covered by the IDAF programme. The documents presented at the meeting are summaries of indvidual reports published by the IDAF programme, which covered 5 complementary studies analyzing: 1) income generated by women in the Koko fishing community of Nigeria; 2) the organization of women and the factors that favour or impede the sustainability of their activities in 2 fishing villages in the Gambia; 3) the nutritional hygiene and sanitation conditions of women and children in the fishing communities of Joal in Senegal and Limbe in Cameroon; and, 4) the elements and mechanisms of the participation of women in the implementation of the integrated project of Aguegues in Benin. Abstracts of the documents presented at the meeting, which have not yet been published, are cited individually in this issue of ASFA.
