    This report describes the work carried out at the Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Training Centre (FARTC) under the FAO/UNDP Project IND/75/031 in the field of fish health protection and diseases and outlines suggestions on future research programmes. The review of the implementation of the existing research programmes showed that considerable progress has been made and the review of diagnostic work on fish diseases revealed occurrence of several known and of several so far undescribed dis eases in cultured fish. The research programmes should be directed towards further development of methodologies, continued inventory of the most significant fish health problems in pond culture in India, development of prophylactic measures and study of selected significant diseases.

    The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill.

    The intensification and further development of freshwater aquaculture in India urgently requires knowledge, research facilities and research and expertise on fish diseases and fish health protection. This report describes the initiation of work in this area at the Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Training Centre of the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, as part of the FAO/UNDP Project IND/75/031. Work accomplished in theoretical and practical training of young scientists on fish diseases and research methodologies, as well as assistance in establishing adequate conditions for research are described. During the practical training three fish diseases were diagnosed that had so far not been reported in India. In a pond experiment set up for training, the efficiency of antibiotic administration during handling in preventing post-handling losses due to columnaris disease was clearly demonstrated. Considering the present and future needs for research on fish diseases and h ealth protection and the probable role of FARTC in it, proposals on organization of work in this area were prepared. It is suggested that the research team work as the Unit for Ichthyopathology and Fish Health Protection. The Unit should cooperate closely with other research teams and scientists at FARTC. Fields of work in the Unit and proposals for five initial 3 year research programmes are outlined. The research projects are oriented towards development of methodologies for detection, identif ication and the inventory of diseases in composite fish culture.
