dc.description.abstract Sri Lanka possesses a wealth of biological diversity and is classified as a global biodiversity hotspot. The country ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1994 and, in 2004, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which aims to address the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs). Subsequently, Sri Lanka formulated the National Policy on Biosafety and the National Biosafety Framework (NBF). In addition, MoEdrafted a specific Act addressing matters related to the safe use of modern biotechnology. However, the country needed capacity to implement the NBF. The aim of the project was to fulfil this requirement by strengthening institutional, technical and human capacity to implement the NBF in Sri Lanka.
