    Agricultural production more than tripled between 1960 and 2015, owing in part to productivity-enhancing technologies and a significant expansion in the use of land, water, and other natural resources for agricultural purposes. Today, more than ever, agriculture faces multiple and complex challenges. It has to provide sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet boosting demand by a growing and progressively more prosperous population, and ensure food security for all. Prepared to support the G20 Presidency of Japan and the G20 Agriculture Deputies, these three background notes provide an overview on the following interlinked issues: (i) the policy challenges for strengthening the participation of farmers into modern value chains and promoting value addition, inclusion, sustainability and rural economic growth; (ii) the need for a transformation in the skillset of agricultural workers and a renewed focus on human capital development in agriculture, and (iii) the contribution of agriculture to the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

    In Brief: The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2017 – SOFI 2017

    A shorter version of the FAO flagship publication The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2017 (SOFI), the In Brief is aimed at the media, policy makers and a more general public. SOFI 2017 warns that the long-term declining trend in undernourishment seems to have come to a halt and may have in fact reversed, largely on account of the increased number of ongoing conflicts and the adverse impacts of climate change. Meanwhile, though progress continues to be made in reducing child malnutrition, overweight and obesity are a growing concern in most parts of the world. These and other findings are detailed in this year’s report, which for the first time is published by an expanded partnership, with UNICEF and WHO now joining FAO, IFAD and WFP.

    Food is a fundamental human right, yet too many people in the world do not have secure access to the food they need. High-quality data and their accurate analysis are essential to design, monitor and evaluate effective food security and nutrition (FSN) policies. Data are also fundamental to ensure accountability of government policies and to monitor their implementation and impact. The data revolution, driven by new technologies, is increasing exponentially the volume and types of data available. This provides great opportunities for informing and transforming food systems, but also presents new challenges which, if not properly tackled, can deepen inequalities. This report presents the inherent complexity and multiple dimensions of FSN data collection, analysis and use – including economic, social, institutional, political, legal and technical dimensions; the types of users involved and the numerous and diverse purposes for which data may be used in food security and nutrition efforts, as well as the extant challenges. The report also advances actionable recommendations to enhance the contribution that data can make to ensuring food security and nutrition for all.
