No results found.The case study focuses on the Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme (TKPP), part of Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, aiming to reduce human-wildlife conflict, particularly livestock depredation, near Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The TKPP developed a community guardian program called the Long Shields Lion Guardian Programme (LSLGP). Local men and women were recruited to serve as guardians and protect livestock from predators. They used GPS collars on potential problem lions, alerting farmers via WhatsApp to move their livestock when lions approached. The guardians also hazed lions using noise makers. Additionally, the TKPP introduced mobile communal bomas to protect livestock and fertilize crop fields. The LSLGP resulted in a 50% reduction in livestock losses by lions, and fewer lions were killed in retaliation. Crop yields in fields with mobile bomas increased by up to 50%, improving food security. Local communities showed a positive attitude towards coexisting with lions and were willing to pay for the programs. Lessons learned include the importance of local researchers, communication, community involvement, and flexibility in implementation. -

No results found.At the 2020 Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC35), FAO presented a technical paper titled Setting regional priorities to manage water for agriculture under conditions of water scarcity. The technical paper, and the proposal for a new Water Scarcity Programme contained within it, were widely endorsed by the 35th Regional Conference. This information document serves to provide an update on the follow up actions taken in response to APRC35 recommendations. It provides an overview of the five-year Water Scarcity Programme (WSP) for Asia and the Pacific region and progress made in its development. The WSP has now been developed in detail and is designed to support FAO Members in taking practical steps to address and manage water scarcity in a changing climate. The WSP is based on extensive scoping activities that FAO carried out between 2019 and 2021. It is a consultative document designed to allow the Regional Conference to provide inputs and comments for improvement. -

Peru’s Potato Park, a unique 15 000 ha reserve high in the Andes, was established to conserve the region’s potato biodiversity, a task that has become increasingly difficult as warming climates have altered the growing patterns of some of the area’s local varieties. The reserve is home to six indigenous Quechua communities whose 8 000 residents manage their communal lands jointly for their collective benefit. The co mmunal activities are spearheaded by the organization known as the “guardian of native potatoes”, the Papa Arariwa Collective.

No results found.The Laos Climate Services in Agriculture (LaCSA) system was developed by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) project Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information System (SAMIS). The LaCSA archives and processes agro-meteorological and climatological data to provide agro-advisory services to next- and end-users. It generates and delivers tailored agro-met services to farmers by analyzing the meteorological data, agriculture data from national databases, and field level data collected by partners to produce seasonal (monthly) and real-time (weekly) agro-advisory in the form of bulletins. The bulletins contain district- and province-specific crop and livestock forecasted climate risks, pest and diseases risk advisory, and climate smart farming recommendations. The production of the recommendations was undertaken by the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) and by the CIAT project DeRISK. Jointly these entities collected and systematized detailed agricultural data and experts knowledge throughout the country. The recommendations went through a series of revisions and validations based on feedback from local crop experts. The agricultural recommendations (presented here in English but available in Lao language too) are structured in tables. Rows list the farming activity, and columns contain farming practices by rainfall forecast compared to the climatological average, for which three conditions are possible: normal, wetter than normal, and drier than normal. This leaflet aims to promote fair access and transparency for researchers, development partners, and advisory users. LaCSA is a dynamic system and information can be updated and modified based on new knowledge and need. Authorized representatives will improve the recommendations over time. -

No results found.Indonesia is a major producer of agricultural products, although agriculture remains a highly labour-intensive sector and the cost of agricultural inputs is high. Strategies on e-agriculture have been developed in several countries to rationalize resources (financial, human, infrastructure, natural) and address national priorities holistically. Since 2005, Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), through its Centre for Agricultural Data and System Information (CADIS) and the Strategic Agricultural Command Centre (KOSTRA TANI), has been moving towards digitizing data. According to current records, the MoA has at least 700 online reporting systems for various needs and purposes. To streamline data management within this online environment, the MoA initiated the development of an agriculture war room (AWR). The MoA has identified several courses of action related to improving digital agriculture: (i) the development of a comprehensive strategy based on identified gaps and needs, building on existing frameworks and capacities to support the MoA in harnessing data and information resources to be able to achieve Indonesia’s agricultural vision; (ii) the further technical development of the e-agriculture data system, in support of the AWR, including an Early Warning System (EWS) platform; (iii) the development of national and provincial technical capacities on digital agriculture services/solutions. -
