This fact sheet provides information on the Objectives and activities of Work Programme 6 of the SponGES project: Threats and impacts to sponge grounds. Considering diverse anthropogenic stressors acting on the deep sea and the vulnerability of deep-sea sponges to human disturbance, it is urgent to understand the full scale of human impacts on these ecosystems, and how they interact with each other. Such information is essential to respond to international regulations such as the UNGA Resolution 61/105 for the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fishing practices and for identifying indicators of Good Environmental Status for seafloor integrity of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

This training workshop aims to improve the entrepreneurial capacity of organized small-scale aquaculture producers to develop a market for their products, integrate their enterprise in the value chain, and participate effectively in the value chain. The main participants were the members of a women’s association called the Binmaley Rural Improvement Club (BRIC). They are farming milkfish, and processing and marketing milkfish-based product forms. The technical sessions had three parts: (1) presentations of the case study, five learning modules, and overview of a national programme on ‘Gender responsive economic actions for the transformation of women’, (2) group exercises on the three selected topics, i.e. generating innovative product ideas, developing a basic business plan for a product, and improving the market for existing products, and (3) discussion on the case study and on the working group results. The programme included a field trip to the existing processing facility of BRIC.

    Also available in:

This policy brief highlights SponGES project findings that are relevant to policymakers and fisheries managers. It provides an overview of the tools that are increasingly being used to build knowledge on where deep-sea sponges occur, their quantity and quality, and the role they play in the larger ocean ecosystem in order to enhance their protection, management, and conservation against anthropogenic pressures.
