DocumentCFS voluntary guidelines on gender equality and women's and girls' empowerment in the context of food security and nutrition 2024Currently, the global food system produces enough food to feed every person on the planet. However, due to a range of challenges, an increasing number of people in both rural and urban areas are failing to realize their right to adequate food as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living and meet their daily food and nutritional needs. Discrimination and inequalities worsen food insecurity and various forms of malnutrition, particularly for women and girls. Food insecurity, which had grown in 2020 under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, worsened even further in 2021, exacerbating gender inequality and disproportionately affecting women and girls, in particular among Indigenous Peoples, local communities, migrants, displaced persons and refugees, older women, and persons with disabilities. In this challenging global context, addressing gender inequality and achieving the realization of women’s and girls’ rights is urgent and more important than ever to achieve food security and nutrition for all.

2022This document summarizes the online Consultation for the development of the CFS Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the context of Food Security and Nutrition held on the FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) from 16 September to 30 November 2021. The consultation was facilitated by Françoise Trine, Marina Calvino and Alyson Brody from the Secretariat of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). This online consultation was part of a broader consultative process on the Zero Draft of the Voluntary Guidelines, which also included six regional consultations. Online consultation participants provided general feedback and specific comments on the four parts of the draft. -

No results found.Despite years of progress and global commitments, gender disparities and discrimination in food security persist around the world, particularly affecting women and girls in vulnerable situations. To address these issues, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) included the development of a set of Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the context of Food Security and Nutrition in its 2020–2023 Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPoW). The Guidelines, which were prepared under this project, aimed to (i) support CFS Member States, development partners and other stakeholders to advance the rights of women and girls, as well as gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment (GEWGE) in their efforts to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; and (ii) to provide guidance to countries as they work to contribute to the achievement of CFS’s vision and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality).
