The trifecta of ongoing conflict, worst drought in decades and compounding poverty have contributed to a devolving humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. This means limited food production and depleted agricultural assets, which is affecting the livelihoods of those most vulnerable. To restore agricultural production and protect livestock production, while strenghtening coordination, FAO requires USD 35 million to assist 1.4 million people from January to December 2019.

The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is characterized by a long running conflict and increasing natural disasters, occurring in the backdrop of declining economic conditions due to erosion of livelihoods and employment opportunities. These undesirable factors are fuelling displacements, reducing access to food and agricultural production, and driving unemployment. The ability of vulnerable populations to cope with the crisis has been increasingly exhausted. In 2020, FAO aims to increase the resilience of agriculture-dependent livelihoods, while addressing the immediate acute food insecurity needs.

Four decades of conflict, recurrent natural disasters (most notably droughts and floods) and limited capacity to cope with climate-related shocks have caused massive population displacements and left millions of people in acute food insecurity. FAO is requesting USD 50 million to assist 3.5 million people to improve their food security and livelihoods.
