    The Sixth Session of the Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (CACFish) was held in Izmir, Turkey, from 15 to 18 October 2018. The meeting was attended by five CACFish Member states (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkey), ten Observer countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, Kazakhstan, Republic of Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, the FYR of Macedonia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) and two Observer organizations (EUROFISH International Organization and Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation). The Session discussed 1) main decisions and recommendations of relevant FAO Conferences and Committees; 2) decisions and recommendations of the Fifth Session of CACFish; 3) Commission’s activities implemented in the intersessional period 2016-2017. The Session also reviewed and approved the recommendations of the Fourth Meeting of TAC (28-30 November 2017, Tbilisi, Georgia), namely on the Commission’s annual budget for 2018 and 2019 (USD 180 000) and priority activities to be funded by the CACFish Trust Fund during the intersessional period 2018-2019. During the Session, both Member and Observer countries presented their country-level activities and issues in the field of fisheries and aquaculture. The hosts for the Fifth TAC Meeting (November 2019) and the Seventh CACFish Session (October 2020) were proposed, to be followed up by the Secretariat and respective Governments.

    The 2025 Session of the Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (CACFish) was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 25–26 November and hosted by the Fisheries Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan. The meeting brought together four Member States: Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Türkiye, along with five participating non-Member States: Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, Turkmenistan and Ukraine. The Commission reviewed key decisions and recommendations from FAO Regional Conferences, Committees and Regional Fisheries Bodies, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that regional priorities are reflected in global and regional policy processes. The Secretariat presented administrative and financial updates, noting improved compliance by one Member State while persistent arrears from two others continue to challenge financial sustainability. Membership expansion was identified as a positive development, with additional countries expected to join as accession processes advance.Technical discussions focused on adapting FAO Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture to the regional context, advancing zoning and site selection, developing a fisheries data collection system and adopting non-binding Best Practice Guidance on Occupational Safety and Health. The Commission acknowledged its expanding technical scope and achievements during the intersessional period, reaffirming its role in addressing regional challenges.The Session approved an autonomous annual budget of USD 180 000 for 2025–2026, endorsed revisions to the Rules of Procedure and adopted the work programme for 2025–2027, underscoring CACFish’s commitment to advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development in the region.

    The Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (CACFish) held its seventh session physically in Istanbul, Turkey from 11 to 13 October 2021. Four Member States attended the CACFish session: Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkey. Seven invited States were present, namely: Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Moldova, Mongolia, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The EUROFISH International Organization and the Commission on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution participated in the Session as intergovernmental organizations with observer status. The Commission was briefed on the main decisions and recommendations arising from the latest sessions of the FAO Governing Bodies, namely the Regional Conference for Europe and the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) as well as CACFish. Discussions took place about strategic approaches to increase the number of CACFish Members and further strengthen cooperation with non-CACFish Member States. The Commission decided to abolish the Five-year Regional Work Programme as suggested by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The Commission reviewed the key outcomes and main recommendations of the Fifth Meeting of TAC. Региональная комиссия по рыбному хозяйству и аквакультуре в Центральной Азии и на Кавказе (CACFish) провела свое седьмое заседание в очном формате в Стамбуле, Турция, с 11 по 13 октября 2021. В сессии приняли участие четыре страны-члена CACFish: Азербайджан, Кыргызстан, Таджикистан и Турция. Присутствовали также представители из семи приглашённых стран: Грузии, Казахстана, Республики Молдовы, Монголии, Российской Федерации, Украины и Узбекистана. В качестве межправительственных организаций со статусом наблюдателя в сессии приняли участие Международная организация ЕВРОФИШ (EUROFISH) и Комиссия по защите Черного моря от загрязнения. Комиссия была проинформирована об основных решениях и рекомендациях последних сессий руководящих органов ФАО, а именно Региональной конференции для Европы и Комитета по рыбному хозяйству (КРХ), а также CACFish. Состоялись обсуждения стратегических подходов к увеличению числа членов CACFish и дальнейшему укреплению сотрудничества со странами, не входящими в CACFish. Комиссия решила отменить Пятилетнюю региональную рабочую программу, как это было предложено Техническим консультативным комитетом (ТКК). Комиссия рассмотрела ключевые результаты и основные рекомендации пятого совещания ТКК.

    While some progress and recovery have been made in recent years, the world is still above pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels and far from eradicating hunger and food insecurity by 2030 (SDG Target 2.1). Similarly, despite some progress in the global nutrition targets, the world is not on track to achieve SDG Target 2.2. Among other factors, persistent food price inflation has slowed this momentum.The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 highlights how elevated inflation in many countries has undermined purchasing power and, especially among low-income populations, access to healthy diets. The report documents how high food price inflation is associated with increases in food insecurity and child malnutrition. Vulnerable groups, including low-income households, women, and rural communities, can be particularly affected by food price inflation, risking setbacks in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.In response to these challenges and to prevent future price shocks, the report examines policy measures adopted by countries, and outlines what is necessary going forwards. It stresses the importance of coherent implementation of fiscal and monetary policies to stabilize markets, promote open and resilient trade, and protect vulnerable populations. Additionally, it calls for better data systems and sustained investment in resilient agrifood systems to build long-term food security and nutrition. These coordinated actions are vital to reignite progress towards ending hunger and malnutrition by 2030.

    This 2025 edition of the GFCM flagship publication The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date review of fisheries and aquaculture status and trends in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region. The sixth installment of this report is the most ambitious to date and comes as a result of an unprecedented collaborative effort across the region. It reflects incremental scientific work, strengthened monitoring and significant innovations in data collection and analysis. The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2025 expands temporal coverage and incorporates new data on both fisheries and aquaculture, providing a clear and accurate picture of trends and challenges across the region and assessing progress towards the targets set by the GFCM 2030 Strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The report begins with an overview of aquatic food systems in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, before diving into a detailed analysis of capture fisheries production, bycatch and the status of fisheries resources in Chapters one through three. Chapter four explores the rapidly expanding aquaculture sector in the region. Chapter five examines the human dimension of fisheries and aquaculture through socioeconomic data and Chapters six and seven highlight the measures taken and the efforts needed to secure the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in the region. This report aims to provide objective, accurate and complete information to support evidence-based decision-making, monitor progress towards sustainability goals and inspire renewed commitments.
