No results found.The habitat of tsetse fly (Glossina spp.) depends upon climatic conditions, host availability and land cover characteristics. In this paper, the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS), developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is proposed as a tool to harmonize land cover mapping exercises carried out in the context of tsetse and trypanosomiasis (T&T) research and control. Habitat modifications are increasingly indu ced by human actions, either at a global scale, as in the case of climatic change, or at a local scale, as in the processes of urbanization and agricultural expansion. The challenges posed in the future by trypanosomiasis are likely to be shaped by those factors to the extent that no appropriate intervention can possibly be contemplated without considering them. -

No results found.Tsetse flies (Genus: Glossina) occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where they transmit trypanosomosis, a group of parasitic diseases that affect both animals and humans. Tsetse and trypanosomosis are a constant drain on the resources of poor African livestock keepers and they also impose a public health burden. Comprehensive data on the geographic distribution of tsetse flies is crucial to design evidence-based and cost-effective strategies against animal trypanosomoses, and it is also important in eliminating the human form of the disease. Despite this, the latest maps of tsetse distribution in Africa were published several decades ago. The present publication provides an update on the geographical distribution of tsetse flies in Africa. A total of 669 scientific publications spanning a period of 31 years (1990–2020) provided the input data, and almost 7 400 distinct geographical locations were mapped. Tsetse flies were recorded from a maximum latitude of 15° North in Senegal, to a minimum of 28.5° South in South Africa. Data coverage is uneven, and no eligible publication was found for Burundi, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone or Somalia. A dearth of information also affects a few other countries, such as Angola, the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. At the level of tsetse species, relatively abundant data were identified for the species of major veterinary and public health importance, especially of the riverine (palpalis) and savannah (morsitans) groups. By contrast, limited information is available on many species of the forest (fusca) group. The continental atlas of tsetse flies, in combination with the upcoming component on animal trypanosomosis, can be used by policy makers, practitioners and scientists engaged in the control and elimination of tsetse flies and trypanosomosis in Africa. It also provides a blueprint for national authorities to develop country-level information systems (i.e. "national atlases") to assist planning and monitoring of control activities at the national and local levels. -

No results found.The tsetse fly (genus Glossina) is found throughout the continent of Africa and is the primary vector of human and animal sleeping sickness. It is of substantial significance to human health and, through its impact on livestock, the economic welfare of rural farmers and stockowners. It is estimated that eradicating the disease would lead to as much as a threefold increase in cattle numbers within the afflicted areas (PAATIS) and to economic benefits of billions of dollars per year. As a result, the distributions of the various tsetse species are of significant interest to those concerned with rural poverty in developing Africa. Reliable assessments would permit planned disease prevention programmes through the suppression or control of the disease vector.

The ecosystem approach to aquaculture provides the conceptual guideline for spatial planning and management. This publication describes the major steps related to these activities. The rationale for and objectives of each step, the ways (methodologies) to implement it, and the means (tools) that are available to enable a methodology are described in a stepwise fashion. Recommendations to practitioners and policy-makers are provided. A separate policy brief accompanies this paper. The benefits fro m spatial planning and management are numerous and include higher productivity and returns for investors, and more effective mitigation of environmental, economic and social risks, the details of which are provided in this paper. This publication is organized in two parts. Part one is the “Guidance”; it is the main body of the document and describes the processes and steps for spatial planning, including aquaculture zoning, site selection and area management. Part two of the publication includes six annexes that present key topics, including: (i) binding and non-legally binding international instruments, which set the context for sustainable national aquaculture; (ii) biosecurity zoning; (iii) aquaculture certification and zonal management; (iv) an overview of key tools and models that can be used to facilitate and inform the spatial planning process; (v) case studies from ten countries – Brazil, Chile, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Oman, the Philippines, Turkey, Uganda and the United Kingd om of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; and (vi) a workshop report. No results found.The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture presents the first global assessment of biodiversity for food and agriculture worldwide. Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and to the supply of a wide range of ecosystem services. It has been managed or influenced by farmers, livestock keepers, forest dwellers, fish farmers and fisherfolk for hundreds of generations. Prepared through a participatory, country-driven process, the report draws on information from 91 country reports to provide a description of the roles and importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture, the drivers of change affecting it and its current status and trends. It describes the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities. It concludes with a discussion of needs and challenges in the future management of biodiversity for food and agriculture. The report complements other global assessments prepared under the auspices of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which have focused on the state of genetic resources within particular sectors of food and agriculture.
