Synopsis (short abstract) Over the last few years, many fisheries managers have advocated preparing and implementing specific fisheries management plans, with some countries having produced such plans and, in some cases, started implementing them. The aim of the workshop was to extract lessons learned from experience gained and to transform them into recommendations for the future development of specific fisheries management plans. Participation in the workshop was limited to people from the Eastern and Southern Africa – Indian Ocean (ESA-IO) region with direct experience on the preparation of specific management plans. Participants were from Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius/Rodrigues, Madagascar, Seychelles, and Tanzania/Zanzibar. The format of the workshop included preparatory work in the form of a questionnaire that was sent to the participants prior to the workshop and which was aimed at gathering information from each participant on the way fishery management plans are developed. During the workshop, detailed dis cussions were held on six key steps that were also set as headings in the questionnaire: the idea, developing the proposal, securing the go ahead for the project, compiling the management plan, government endorsement of the plan and implementation.

    The livelihood opportunity that sea cucumber fisheries provide to many coastal fishers in the Indian Ocean is threatened by widespread overfishing.The five-day SCEAM Indian Ocean workshop was held in November 2012 and brought together fishery managers from 14 countries to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and improving management plans in Indian Ocean sea cucumber fisheries. It followed the format of a similar workshop that was held in the Pacific in 2011. Workshop facilitators first present ed background seminars on up-to-date research on fisheries management. The workshop then focused on interactive sessions with workgroup exercises and plenary discussions that helped participants diagnose their fisheries before deciding on appropriate objectives, regulatory measures and management actions. A field day was also included in the agenda to provide hands-on experience in species identification and product processing. The workshop outputs given in this report detail current managemen t practices and constraints in Indian Ocean sea cucumber fisheries and the proposed strategies and research priorities of the participating fishery managers.

    Under the EAF-Nansen Programme (Supporting the application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management considering climate and pollution impacts), a national workshop was organized at the premises of the FAO Representation in Dar es Salaam, the United Republic of Tanzania, from 3 to 5 July 2018. The objective of the workshop was to discuss follow-up actions for the implementation of the United Republic of Tanzania small and medium pelagic fisheries management plan (AFMP). The workshop was attended by 11 participants from the United Republic of Tanzania Fisheries Development Division of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute, SWIOFish Project, Civil society organizations (CSOs), fishers associations, the Norwegian Department of Fisheries and the EAF-Nansen Programme. The three-day programme included presentations on the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF), the fisheries management cycle (FMC) and management plans. Discussions were also held on background information needed to implement the plan. Additionally, several activities were proposed in the form of a concept note to guide the FAO EAF-Nansen Programme’s support to implement the AFMP.

    The Workshop on the Harmonization of Marine Fisheries Policy within Coastal Countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was the final activity of a project (TCP/RAF/8933) requested by SADC and financed by FAO. It was held at Uroa Beach, Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, from 24 to 27 July 2001. The Workshop discussed the main working documents presented by the project steering committee: a comparative analysis of the fisheries legal frameworks of SADC coastal countries ; an analysis of international and intraregional trade of fisheries products; and a synthesis of the national reports prepared by the countries. Three working groups were created to discuss elements dealing with trade, legal and fisheries management issues, respectively, taking into consideration the relevant articles of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The three working groups evaluated the documents provided by the project steering committee and improved the list of propose d activities. These were also ranked in order of priority at national and regional levels, and general mechanisms for their implementation were proposed. On the basis of the work of these subgroups, elements for an Action Plan were identified at the regional level taking into consideration the relevant provisions of the Protocol on Fisheries to the SADC Treaty.
