Synopsis (short abstract) In accordance with the survey plan a main acoustical coverage of the shelf from Agadir to Cape Juby was first to be made to localize the aggregations of small pelagic fish, mainly sardines. Then effort was to be concentrated on these aggregations with detailed studies on biomass estimation, target strength and fish behaviour.

    In an agreement between NORAD and FAO/UNDP the R/V “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” has been scheduled to work in the region from Morocco to Sierra Leone within the CECAF programme from August to December 1986. A planning meeting was held on 7-9 April at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where it was agreed that the R/V “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” should work in Morocco for abt. 14 days in September and in November, in cooperation with the new R/V “Charif El Idrissi”. The first survey was set to the period 22 September to 5 October. Due to technical problems the “Charif El Idrissi” could not participate in the September survey, and it was decided that “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” should do the acoustical work by itself. In November the two vessels plan to do a joint survey. In accordance with the survey plan a main acoustical coverage of the shelf from Agadir to Cape Juby was first to be made to localize the aggregations of small pelagic fish, mainly sardines.     Preliminary Cruise Report Dr. Fridtjof Nansen - Second Fisheries Resource Survey Pakistan, 20 January - February 1984 1984

    The research vessel “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” is scheduled to undertake several fishery resources surveys in the North Arabian Sea during 1983-84. These investigations are part of the UNDP/FAO Global Programme GLO/82/001. The first cruise in Pakistani waters under this programme was carried out in September 1983. The survey programme included acoustical survey for the purpose of mapping fish distribution and abundance estimation, trawling for identification of echo recordings, biological sampli ng and hydrographic observations. “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” carried out similar surveys in Pakistani waters during the North Arabian Sea Programme in 1975-76 and during the Joint NORAD/Pakistan Project from January to June 1971. The results from these investigations have been presented in cruise reports as well as in summary reports. The present survey was carried out during the period 19 January to 2 February 1984.     The survey tracks and fishing stations worked are shown in Figure 1. When steaming south after departure from Dakar on August 17 the shelf was followed so that a track along the banks was obtained.
