Synopsis (short abstract) The Horn of Africa (HoA) region faces serious challenges in stimulating agricultural growth and investment. With a population of over 230 million people, much of the land is arid or semi-arid. Despite significant recent economic growth, many areas are hampered by recurring droughts and civil strife, leading to youth migration, serious food insecurity and malnutrition, among other challenges. This project aimed to support the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in promoting agricultural growth and food and nutrition security through increased investments in sustainable agriculture, inter-regional trade in the HoAregion and trade with the Arabian Peninsula.

    Southern Africa is one of the regions highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Mozambique is one of the least developing countries in the region experiencing this devastating effect on the agricultural livelihood of its rural population. Climate change will have a significant impact on the Limpopo River Basin and its tributaries which flow across the vast areas of the semi-arid plateau of the southern provinces of Mozambique where the United Nations Joint Programme (UNJP) on Environme ntal Mainstreaming and Adaptation to Climate Change is operating. This publication documents the experiences, successes and challenges being faced in implementing the adaptation interventions in one of the remote districts where very few development agencies are operating. It identifies, at farm and community level, adaptive interventions that have been tested and applied and which have shown positive impact on productivity, broadened livelihoods basis, and improved resilience to climate change in the face of current and future climate-related stresses.

    Strengthening Ecowas Capacities for the Promotion of Productive and Sustainable Agriculture in West Africa - GCP/RAF/461/SPA 2021

    Agriculture is the most crucial sector of the economies of West African countries, as it ensures the food and nutrition security of millions of people. As part of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), adopted in 2003, African heads of state and of government committed to dedicating at least 10 percent of their budgets to agriculture. In this context, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2005 drafted its agricultural policy (ECOWAP), which was aimed at encouraging its member states and supporting them in orienting their commercial and macro economic policies towards the acceleration of agricultural development and the reduction of poverty in the region. The project was designed to support the implementation of the CAADP/ECOWAP, both at regional level, through capacity building for ECOWAS in terms of investment programme /project design and management and resource mobilization, and at national level, with support for the operationalization of the National Agriculture Investment Programme (NAIPs) of selected countries.
