The agriculture sector plays a key role in achieving many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from accessing nutritious and healthy food to developing sustainable agricultural systems, while respecting human rights and working conditions. The agrifood sustainability challenge affects each territory differently, depending on local strengths and weaknesses: understanding these realities is critical in targeting the appropriate drivers of the agriculture sector and promoting effective policies without overexploiting resources. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes key data that harmonize agricultural production data collected for 199 countries and territories. This analytical brief summarizes and highlights relevant patterns from 2010 up to 2023 featured by the latest data published on the FAOSTAT data platform.

This report describes the update of the Digital Global Map of Irrigation Areas to version 5. For this update, the inventory of subnational irrigation statistics was updated with new information derived from national census surveys or irrigation sector studies. For the first time, the global map of irrigation areas also contains data layers on the percentage of area equipped for irrigation that is actually irrigated and on the source of irrigation water: groundwater, surface water, water from non-conventional sources.

Analysis and interpretation of preliminary results in key regions and countries

The purpose of this document is to provide suggestions for the interpretation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator 6.4.1. In particular, it focuses on the concept of economic decoupling from water-use, and its application in policy making. The evolution in water-use and water-use efficiency in four selected regions: Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, is discussed. Particular attention is given to the evolution in water-use, water-use efficiency and related drivers in two groups of countries, including major developed economies and newly industrialized countries, and in different economic sectors. The relation of water-use efficiency with economic growth and access to safe drinking water is analyzed and discussed in the context of the literature on the Environmental Kuznets Curve applied to water resources. A country-based example is presented to illustrate some aspects of these issues and a few concluding remarks are provided.
