No results found.Drought caused by poor rains in the last four seasons and a high incidence of HIV/AIDS are both long-term crises that create vicious cycles of vulnerability, poverty and food insecurity. This study was conducted to determine the effects of HIV/AIDS and drought on the local knowledge systems for agro-biodiversity and food security in Swaziland, as recent years have seen an increase in both types of disaster. The livelihoods approach was used in this study to highlight the linkages betwe en the impact of HIV/AIDS and drought on human, financial and social capital. The study found that there are numerous impacts of HIV/AIDS and drought on the different livelihood assets and the negative impacts are detrimental to food security and local knowledge for agro biodiversity. -

No results found.In 1999, the Government of the Kingdom of Swaziland established a 25-year national development strategy (NDS) to guide the formulation of development plans designed to eradicate poverty, create employment, and achieve gender equity, social integration and environmental protection. Consistent with the priorities and strategies identified in the NDS, the Government of Swaziland has recently begun to implement two major water irrigation projects, the Komati Downstream Development Project (KDDP) and the Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project (LUSIP), in one of the driest and poorest areas of the country (the Lowveld). The aim of these projects is to provide irrigation to 17 500 ha of land, helping local smallholder farmers to shift from a subsistence agricultural system to cashcrop production, mainly of sugar cane. -
