Comparative advantage analysis is a useful tool of economics that can be used to compare relative costs of production and identify species and markets with the greatest likelihood of success. Two different approaches are normally used to assess comparative advantage: the Domestic Resource Cost (DRC) and the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) methods. The DRC approach is dynamic but requires data on production costs which may be hard to obtain. The RCA method is more descriptive and h as less predictive potential than the DRC approach but required data are normally available. This paper illustrates the concept of comparative advantage and some of its policy implications by presenting two case studies (on shrimp export markets and aquaculture production of freshwater finfish) using the RCA method. -

No results found.The assessment of the comparative advantages of a given productive system encompasses a broad range of conceptual works emanating from cost-benefit analysis and the theory of international trade. The basic concept is that an economic activity in a given country has a comparative advantage as far as it can compete with alternative source of supply through import without benefiting from any specific support from the rest of the economy under the form of transfer of resources. The comparative adva ntage of productive systems is measured through the computation of several accounting entities and ratios that have been gradually developed through applied research. In the eighties these different methods have been consolidated into one method named the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM), three lines by three columns table containing all the different accounting values and derived ratios needed for the analysis of the comparative advantage. This analytical framework has been widely used to assist in decision making to monitor trade liberalization process in European, South-East Asian and Sub-Saharan countries from the eighties onward. -

No results found.This series of 13 technical factsheets have been developed by FAO with the support of the Sub-regional Office in the Caribbean and the Plant Production and Protection Division. The content includes technical knowledge on adapted technologies and practices to improve crop management increasing efficiency in the use of limited natural resources such as water and land, nutrients, and labour, as well as promoting local production of high-value and nutritious vegetable crops, generating employment, increasing business opportunities and reducing imports to achieve food security. Factsheets have been designed to provide practical information covering all factors that affect production, including climate, soil, nutrients, water, pest & diseases, and cultural practices for the successful cultivation of vegetable crops. Factsheets also provide knowledge on the key aspects to consider when designing horticulture cultivation systems to achieve optimization, standardization, and adaptation to local conditions in the context of small and medium-scale farmers and to produce horticulture crops with higher quality, food safety, yield, and profits using sustainably natural resources. This publication is aimed to reach a wide audience, including extension services, policymakers, farmers, and the private sector.
