Synopsis (short abstract) Good governance is a concept that is difficult to realize in its totality even in countries with strong institutions and an entrenched culture of democratic governance backed by sound political systems. It remains more an ideal to which countries strive by focusing efforts on bridging the gap between what is achievable and where they are now. The task is particularly daunting for developing countries with fragile institutions, weak regulatory frameworks and inadequate administrative capacities. In recognition of this challenge, this resource guide was prepared to promote good governance in the context of crop agriculture in countries of the Asia-Pacific region. It is targeted at training senior level public officials in the agricultural sector and elected representatives responsible for the management of their country’s agriculture and rural development sectors. Other target audiences include managers of non-governmental and civil society organizations, producer organizations and the p rivate sector. The resource guide covers governance for the agricultural sector, principles of good governance, and agricultural governance in the context of sustainable intensification of smallholder crop production, sustainable crop diversification, seed supply and plant genetic resource management, access to inputs and improved production technology, and food safety. The publication also examines issues of governance relating to corruption and enforcement of rights. Group exercises for traini ng facilitators are provided in the Annexes.

    To improve understanding of agricultural governance, with particular focus on the local impact of governance on smallholder farmers and the opportunities they have to influence the governance system at local levels, the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific brought together experts from across the region to share knowledge and views on the subject. The objective of the consultation was to improve crop sector governance in line with FAO's strategic objective of sustainable intensification of crop production. This publication reports on the proceedings of the expert consultation on small farmer-focused good governance in crop agriculture in Asia and the Pacific convened in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 29 to 30 November 2010. Country papers, outcomes of the discussions and recommendations are included in the report.

    Support to the diversification and sustainable crop production intensification for smallholder farmers in the drylands of Borno State (GCP/INT/1019/TUR) 2024

    Agriculture is the main contributor to Nigeria's national economy, with over 65 percent of the population directly or indirectly relying on it for their livelihoods. Women and youth make up 50–70 percent of the sector's economically active population. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is supporting the capacity development of farmers and institutions. This is achieved through a project aimed at promoting sustainable crop production management techniques. The project expects to improve the capacity of farmers, agricultural and extension specialists, and researchers in diversifying cropping systems and the adoption and promotion of improved crop management techniques.

    A guide to good agricultural practices for commercial production of ginger under field conditions in Jamaica introduces the utilization of the single bud technology in field production systems. This technology provides a means of multiplying the limited available clean planting material and its propagation under nursery conditions. This technology forms the basis of the ginger certification programme and when supported by Good Agriculture Practices (GAPs) as described herein should help ginger growers boost their levels of production. This information has been compiled predominantly from locally validated investigations and accepted norms in the ginger industry worldwide. It incorporates the use of technologies such as drip irrigation, integrated nutrition management and integrated pest management. The aim of this manual is to provide the user with a step-by-step process flow and thorough understanding of the processes and inputs involved in the application of the single bud technology in ginger field production systems. Please note that this system of production is new to Jamaica and warrants that interested growers receive training and conduct evaluations of this system first in their own environment. Care must be taken to ensure that the recommended practices are followed to achieve the desired result.
