No results found.The research function is crucial for developing, testing, and adapting novel solutions for transforming agri-food systems in the region. Yet a study conducted on Malawi’s Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) revealed that the key actors in the system lacked capacity to facilitate and or engage in the research function effectively. To address this constraint, a policy dialogue informed by multi-level and multi-stakeholder approach was facilitated to identify obstacles and propose practical solutions. The Identified key obstacles to agricultural research in promoting innovation were: poor networking, insufficient skills to mobilize resources, absence of knowledge management and communication strategy, weak governance mechanisms, as well as use of an underdeveloped monitoring, evaluation and learning system. This brief includes policy recommendations to strengthen the research function within the AIS framework in Malawi. -

No results found.In recent years, global shocks such as climate events, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis have significantly disrupted food systems worldwide, compounding existing stresses and challenges. In response to these disruptions, FAO has conducted a comprehensive global study that targets all food system stakeholders, including local governments.For this study, in-depth case studies were conducted in 11 cities across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America to provide detailed insights into how food system actors respond to multiple shocks and stresses. Through interviews and focus groups, the case studies capture diverse perspectives and explore the complexities of building resilience in specific contexts. This publication highlights the unique approach of resilience-building efforts in Medellin, Colombia. -

No results found.Sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems are critical to achieving food security and nutrition, promoting adequate livelihoods for farmers, food producers, and their communities, and ensuring environmental sustainability. The imperative to address these intertwined objectives is underscored by the rising attention they have received, as evident in the deliberations of the UN Food Systems Summit. This study reflects on the role of social protection and economic inclusion programmes in food systems transformation. It discusses the country's food systems state and challenges, including poverty, food security, agricultural productivity, and natural resource management. The paper also provides key recommendations on how to accelerate food systems transformation: 1-Developing coherent policies and programmes to maximise synergies between interventions that involve different sectors. 2-Designing and implementing social protection and economic inclusion programmes tailored to rural populations 3- Incorporating a food systems perspective into social protection strategies is vital to proactively address potential trade-offs or unforeseen impacts across social, economic, and environmental dimensions.
