No results found.From July to September 2025, FAO convened four online deliberative dialogue meetings on the subject of how to achieve a just transition in agrifood systems. Through the dialogues, participants developed a more clearly articulated, though still evolving, definition of what a just transition means for agrifood systems. This definition reflects the numerous complexities, actors, and challenges that are unique to agriculture and other forms of food production across different scales and regions. Insights from participants coalesced around a shared conceptualization of a just transition in agrifood systems as a transformational shift from the inequitable and unsustainable models of production, distribution and consumption that characterize today’s global agrifood systems, to ones that are ecologically grounded, rights-based, and socially inclusive - shaped by the distinctive needs, priorities, and participation of the most vulnerable actors - especially those who have been historically marginalized in the Global South. -

No results found.The research function is crucial for developing, testing, and adapting novel solutions for transforming agri-food systems in the region. Yet a study conducted on Malawi’s Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) revealed that the key actors in the system lacked capacity to facilitate and or engage in the research function effectively. To address this constraint, a policy dialogue informed by multi-level and multi-stakeholder approach was facilitated to identify obstacles and propose practical solutions. The Identified key obstacles to agricultural research in promoting innovation were: poor networking, insufficient skills to mobilize resources, absence of knowledge management and communication strategy, weak governance mechanisms, as well as use of an underdeveloped monitoring, evaluation and learning system. This brief includes policy recommendations to strengthen the research function within the AIS framework in Malawi. -

No results found.Over three decades, Farmer Field Schools (FFS) have proven to be fertile spaces where women and men from farming communities generate, test, and adapt ideas that respond to local challenges and support food security and nutrition, climate resilience, ecosystem health and inclusive rural development. This brief speaks to rural development organizations, researchers, and practitioners seeking practical pathways to accelerate innovation for agrifood system transformation. It provides a new lens to intentionally nurture and scale innovations in the context of FFS interventions, and highlights practitioners’ recommendations to improve the contributions of the FFS approach to innovation towards more sustainable, fair and resilient agrifood systems. It is part of a new series of guidance notes and factsheets which draw on documented experiences of innovations in development interventions using FFS.
