Synopsis (short abstract) Agriculture and food industry sectors have a major importance for the Moldovan economy. The Republic of Moldova has one of the highest share of rural population among the countries in Europe and Central Asia, and its agriculture sector significantly contributes to the country’s gross domestic product. This work is a part of a series of studies on the value chain development gaps and the environment for doing business for farmers. The goal of this study is to try to consolidate the information on countrywide value chain development gathered from various open sources and based on materials developed in a field mission by FAO officers with an emphasis on the plum and berry value chains. The authors did not aim at close examination of the selected value chains; rather, this paper is a general overview that will be a reference point for future field work in the country. To get the results, the authors analysed the legislative history related to value chains, collected materials and statistics from open sources, conducted a field mission and interviewed stakeholders. The first part of the report observes the overall situation in the Republic of Moldova with a focus on the agriculture sector, reviewing related legislation, the environment for doing business for farmers, and trade. The paper examines existing support measures for agriculture and covers the banking sector and trade policy. The second part examines value chain actors and overviews the selected value chains of plums and berries. The final part provides recommendations.

    This report presents a comprehensive analysis of the small ruminant value chains in the Republic of Moldova, focusing on opportunities, challenges, and potential for growth. Small ruminant farming, primarily conducted by family farms, plays a vital role in rural livelihoods, contributing significantly to household income through meat, milk, and cheese production. Despite its importance, the sector faces demographic shifts, labour shortages, climate-related pressures, and declining national herd sizes.The study evaluates production dynamics, market structures, and governance across meat, milk, and cheese value chains. It highlights regional disparities, informal market practices, and limited infrastructure, particularly in dairy processing and storage. Farmers show resilience and optimism, with many planning investments in herd expansion, breed improvement, and feed technologies.Trade analysis reveals the Republic of Moldova’s competitive edge in small ruminant meat exports, especially to Near Eastern markets, though recent geopolitical events have disrupted growth. The report identifies key policy gaps and recommends strategic interventions, including improved integration into formal markets, cooperative development, infrastructure upgrades, and climate adaptation strategies.A SWOT analysis underscores the sector’s strengths in productivity and farmer commitment, while pointing to weaknesses in hygiene practices, record-keeping, and policy support. The recommendations aim to foster a more sustainable, competitive, and resilient small ruminant sector, aligning with national development goals and international standards.

    At the request of the government, an FAO Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) visited the country from 10 to 28 October 2022 to estimate the 2022 crop production and forecast the country’s import requirements during the 2022/23 marketing year (July/June). The mission’s aim was to provide an accurate picture of the severity and extent of the drought and high agriculture input prices that affected the agriculture sector in 2022 and to identify the support requirements to the sector until the next harvest in 2023 as well as the medium-term needs to strengthen agriculture resilience.

    This report assesses the impacts of the COVID-19 on the agrifood sector and rural areas in Türkiye. Taking a panoramic picture of the agrifood sector in the country during the COVID-19 period, the study portrays how the pandemic impact on agrifood chains, smallholders and rural economies in Türkiye. The report titled “COVID-19 Rapid Impact Assessment on Agri-Food Sector and Rural Areas in Türkiye” is an outcome of a joint study by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye. Besides assessments on how the pandemic has affected agrifood sector, the report presents policy recommendations for sector preparedness and response, and agricultural and rural resilience. Moreover, the report sheds light on the connection between its suggestions and the Sustainable Development Goals. Authors of this study aims to contribute to the COVID-19 Socio-Economic Impact and Response Task Team (SEIRTT) in United Nations Türkiye, co-led by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Resident Coordinator’s Office. In thematic terms, the report supports efforts to analyse socio-economic dimensions of the COVID-19 in Türkiye. Moreover, the report sets the basis for further institutional engagement with Government and other relevant partners and stakeholders in the short to medium term with respect to agriculture and food sectors.

    The study was undertaken to serve as a basis for the international congress Save Food!, taking place from 16 to 17 May 2011, at the international packaging industry fair Interpack2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Save Food! has been co organized by Interpack2011 and FAO, aiming to raise awareness on global food losses and waste. In addition, Save Food! brings to the attention of the international packaging industry the constraints faced by the small- and medium-scale food processing industries in dev eloping countries to obtain access to adequate packaging materials which are economically feasible. This revised edition, dated 2014, contains a new section on investment opportunities in developing countries (paragraph 3.7).
