Synopsis (short abstract) The agriculture sector plays an important role in Egypt’s economy However, despite progress made over the past years in terms of yield increases, availability of agricultural land and productivity, the country’s food supply remains under pressure owing to key challenges, such as land and water scarcity and deterioration of their quality, low agricultural productivity and livelihood diversification, and rapid population growth Against this background, agricultural planning and attempts to develop realistic investment strategies and polices are greatly impeded by limited data availability and reliability The project aimed to assist the Government of Egypt in addressing the above mentioned challenges and sector needs by i fostering private sector participation in Egypt’s agriculture ii) strengthening public private policy dialogue iii) improving coordination among agricultural development stakeholders and iv) providing capacity development and assistance in technical and institutional aspects.

    Egypt faces significant food security challenges, particularly in Upper Egypt, where 49 percent of residents cannot cover their own basic needs. Most landowners possess less than one feddan, and financial support from the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MOSS) has gradually become insufficient in meeting the basic needs of food-insecure residents due to rising food prices. In response, the MOSS sought FAO assistance to support the nationally led Fostering Opportunities in Rural Southern Areas (FORSA) project, which aimed to economically empower recipients of financial support and smallholders by transforming them into independent producers through various income-generating activities to enhance the agrifood value chain. The horticulture sector in Egypt remains highly fragmented. On one hand, large-scale farms, located in newly reclaimed desert areas, are highly productive, run by professionals, and equipped with modern facilities so that they meet international standards and have robust marketing connections. On the other, smallholders, who farm 90 percent of horticultural land, usually run small, fragmented plots and face numerous challenges such as a lack of planning and inadequate packing and storage facilities, leading to poor product quality and diminished market competitiveness.

    Egypt’s varying climatic zones make it the perfect countryfor growing different varieties of dates. Date palms cantolerate arid conditions and require a relatively smallamount of water, making them an ideal crop for this areaof the world. Dates are a crucial part of the local diet inEgypt, and date by-products, such as bars, blocks, syrupsand pastes, are processed in factories and sold for localconsumption. For these reasons, the date palm tree isexpected to maintain a dominant place in Egyptianagriculture in the future.Despite being ranked the top date producing country inthe world, Egypt’s export contribution to the internationaldate market is low. Food safety issues and a lack ofinternational quality standards (e.g. size, appearance,colour, texture and freedom from defects) contribute toEgypt’s low date exports. Other problems that occurduring growth and post-harvest (e.g. sunburn, skinseparation, sugar migration and fermentation) along withdifficulty managing the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), a majorpest for date palms, are other factors that negativelyimpact Egypt’s date exports. This project sought to buildthe capacity of actors across the value chain through aseries of training sessions for date growers, collectors,traders, packers and processors. It also established a pestmanagement programme for RPW.

    Kyrgyzstan agriculture helped minimize the economic decline in living standards during the years of transition, but the sector still has a huge untapped potential that has been ignored to achieve structural reform, productivity growth and poverty reduction. Kyrgyzstan has been left behind, not only among Central Asia countries (from four to ten times lower income than the average), but also as part of the Lower-Middle Income Countries (1.5 times). The country faces numerous obstacles, such as inefficient use of water and land resources, weak extension systems, fragmented agricultural value chains, poor transport and logistics linkages and environmental disasters. In order to boost all its potential, the sector would need a strong political commitment, an enabling macroeconomic environment, and strengthened capacities of actors and institutions involved in agriculture.
