    The Strengthening Food Control and Phytosanitary Capacities and Governance project is a 2-year project funded by the European Union to assess food control systems and plant health systems in 11 African Union Member Countries. The first side of the fact sheet provides a basic description of the aims of the project as well as the state-of-the-art tools used to conduct the assessments. The second side of the sheet provides a more specific description of the food safety component of the project, its process and the progress made so far.

    The Event on Fusarium Wilt TR4 and the Future of the Banana Industry, was held on Monday, 11 March 2024, at FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy. The event included several in-depth sessions focused on various aspects of TR4 management, including prevention, preparedness, response strategies and the role of FAO in supporting countries and stakeholders. Discussions highlighted the importance of knowledge sharing, capacity building and comprehensive measures for prevention and response, and the need to strengthen international collaboration and multistakeholder initiatives. Panel discussions covered critical topics such as the status of recent TR4 outbreaks, where stakeholders from affected countries shared their experiences and strategies in managing these incursions. Another session delved into the latest technological advancements regarding TR4 diagnosis, monitoring and surveillance, showcasing innovative methods for early detection and warning systems. Additionally, breeding efforts to develop TR4-resistant banana varieties were explored, underlining the critical role of biotechnology and the significant challenges and opportunities in this area.
