Los artculos de este nmero de Unasylva son adaptaciones para un pblico ms amplio de documentos preparados para la reunin. Sin descender a detalles tcnicos, se examinan los vnculos entre evaluacin y vigilancia, necesidades nacionales e internacionales de informacin, criterios e indicadores para la gestin forestal sostenible y comunicacin de la informacin forestal a los instrumentos internacionales. Los detalles tcnicos pueden encontrarse en el sitio Web de la FAO (www.fao.org/forestry) y sern publicados en las actas de Kotka IV.

Medir el impacto del cambio climático en la población rural pobre, las mujeres y los jóvenes: Resumen
2024En este informe se analiza un extraordinario conjunto de datos, obtenido de 24 países de ingresos medios y bajos de cinco regiones del mundo, con el fin de medir el impacto del cambio climático en las mujeres, los jóvenes y las personas pobres que viven en las zonas rurales. Se examinan los datos socioeconómicos obtenidos a partir de 109 341 hogares rurales de esos 24 países como muestra representativa de una población rural de más de 950 millones de personas. La información espacial y temporal de dichos datos se ha combinado con datos georreferenciados relativos a las precipitaciones y temperaturas diarias que se han recopilado a lo largo de 70 años. Los datos permiten desentrañar la forma en que los distintos factores de estrés climático afectan a los ingresos de la población (tanto los que se derivan de la explotación agrícola como los que no, y los totales), la distribución del trabajo y las medidas de adaptación, en función de su riqueza, sexo o edad. En este resumen se presentan de forma sintética los aspectos destacados y las conclusiones más importantes.

No results found.During the last decades, soil organic carbon (SOC) attracted the attention of a much wider array of specialists beyond agriculture and soil science, as it was proven to be one of the most crucial components of the earth’s climate system, which has a great potential to be managed by humans. Soils as a carbon pool are one of the key factors in several Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 15, “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss” with the SOC stock being explicitly cited in Indicator 15.3.1. This technical manual is the first attempt to gather, in a standardized format, the existing data on the impacts of the main soil management practices on SOC content in a wide array of environments, including the advantages, drawbacks and constraints. This manual presents different sustainable soil management (SSM) practices at different scales and in different contexts, supported by case studies that have been shown with quantitative data to have a positive effect on SOC stocks and successful experiences of SOC sequestration in practical field applications. Volume 5 includes 24 practices that have a direct impact on SOC sequestration and maintenance in forestry, wetlands and urban soils. -

2020FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources in 1948. At that time, its major objective was to collect information on available timber supply to satisfy post-war reconstruction demand. Since then, the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) has evolved into a comprehensive evaluation of forest resources and their condition, management and uses, covering all the thematic elements of sustainable forest management. This, the latest of these assessments, examines the status of, and trends in, forest resources over the period 1990–2020, drawing on the efforts of hundreds of experts worldwide. The production of FRA 2020 also involved collaboration among many partner organizations, thereby reducing the reporting burden on countries, increasing synergies among reporting processes, and improving data consistency. The results of FRA 2020 are available in several formats, including this report and an online database containing the original inputs of countries and territories as well as desk studies and regional and global analyses prepared by FAO. I invite you to use these materials to support our common journey towards a more sustainable future with forests. -

No results found.Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated.
