Use of the Internet for development organizations in Africa 1995

Although ALCOM has been using the Internet for E-mail purposes since late 1993 it wasn't until April '95, that it actually got an on-line Internet connection through a server in Harare, Zimbabwe. Now, less than six months later, ALCOM has established its own home page and made its quarterly newsletter and publications available to virtually every Internet-user in the world. For many people and organizations, there is still a big psychological barrier to the use of this growing communication medi um. Use of the Internet however is not complicated, does not require very expensive infrastructure and is within the reach of most development organizations. Setting up a home page on the Internet and networking with other organizations and people is a simple and efficient means of communication

Predicting ecology and fish yields in African reservoirs from preimpoundment physico-chemical data / Ecologie des réservoirs africains et leur rendement en poisson à partir de données psycho-chimiches réunies avant endiguement 1984

This paper attempts to improve the predictive capabilities of preimpoundment studies, with special emphasis on fish yields. It relies heavily on empirical models based on a relatively limited data base. It is hoped that the results will show that meaningful predictions can be made from simple, easily obtained data, a consideration especially important in an era of limited manpower and financial resources. The models described in this paper have not always been based on African data. Those that have been will be affected by the general inaccuracy of the original information, especially that regarding fish yields from African reservoirs. Nevertheless, if these limitations are borne in mind, the models may still be valuable and will have served their purpose if they stimulate others to use and improve them. An appendix has been included to illustrate the use of the models described in the text in an actual preimpoundment situation.

    Tackling Climate Change through Livestock
A global assessment of emissions and mitigation opportunities
    2013
As renewed international efforts are needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the livestock sector can contribute its part. An important emitter of greenhouse gas, it also has the potential to significantly reduce its emissions. This report provides a unique global assessment of the magnitude, the sources and pathways of emissions from different livestock production systems and supply chains. Relying on life cycle assessment, statistical analysis and scenario building, it also prov ides estimates of the sector’s mitigation potential and identifies concrete options to reduce emissions. The report is a useful resource for stakeholders from livestock producers to policy-makers, researchers and civil society representatives, which also intends to inform the public debate on the role of livestock supply chains in climate change and possible solutions.

2019 Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition - In Brief
Containing the damage of economic slowdowns and downturns to food insecurity in Africa
    2020
    Also available in:

In the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition, FAO reported that the prevalence of undernourishment was rising in the region. The latest data shows that the deterioration has slowed, but there remain 256 million hungry people in Africa today. The report further documents that although many African countries are making progress towards reducing malnutrition, progress is too slow to meet six key nutrition targets, which form part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) monitoring framework and the World Health Assembly global nutrition targets. Food insecurity has been rising in Africa in recent years and the continent is not on track to eliminate hunger by 2030. The 2017, 2018 and this year’s report identify and report in detail on conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns as the key drivers of the rise in food insecurity. In most cases, the economic slowdowns and downturns that contributed to rising undernourishment in 2014–2018 were the result of commodity price falls. Many effective policy tools are available, but their adoption will depend on the availability of fiscal space to effect the desired policy action. In the longer-term, countries must develop policies and invest to achieve a more diversified economy and achieve an inclusive structural transformation. However, sustained economic growth is not enough: reducing inequalities, including gender-based and spatial inequalities, is essential to strengthening household resilience, laying the path to inclusive growth and reducing food insecurity and tackling the multiple forms of malnutrition.
