No results found.This 2025 edition of the GFCM flagship publication The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date review of fisheries and aquaculture status and trends in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region. The sixth installment of this report is the most ambitious to date and comes as a result of an unprecedented collaborative effort across the region. It reflects incremental scientific work, strengthened monitoring and significant innovations in data collection and analysis. The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2025 expands temporal coverage and incorporates new data on both fisheries and aquaculture, providing a clear and accurate picture of trends and challenges across the region and assessing progress towards the targets set by the GFCM 2030 Strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The report begins with an overview of aquatic food systems in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, before diving into a detailed analysis of capture fisheries production, bycatch and the status of fisheries resources in Chapters one through three. Chapter four explores the rapidly expanding aquaculture sector in the region. Chapter five examines the human dimension of fisheries and aquaculture through socioeconomic data and Chapters six and seven highlight the measures taken and the efforts needed to secure the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in the region. This report aims to provide objective, accurate and complete information to support evidence-based decision-making, monitor progress towards sustainability goals and inspire renewed commitments. -

No results found.This 2023 special edition of the GFCM’s flagship publication, The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, updates statistics and figures on the status and management of fisheries in the region and includes, for the first time, an overview of regional indicators on the aquaculture sector in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. It aims to deliver useful and reliable data to a wide audience as an essential source of information on fisheries and aquaculture in the region and a key tool to support decision-making and monitor progress towards the goals set by the GFCM. The fifth instalment of its series, this publication covers topics of regional importance in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors over the course of seven chapters. Fleet status and capture fisheries production are the focus of the first two chapters, which include figures on fishing capacity and landings by country and fleet segment. Chapter three captures the human dimension behind the region’s fisheries through socioeconomic data on revenue and employment. In chapter four, information on discards is updated and categorized for the main fishing fleets in each GFCM subregion, along with details on the species that make up this important component of the catch. Chapter five reviews the status of fisheries resources, especially regional trends and trends in priority species, while chapter seven summarizes relevant existing and new adopted measures towards the sustainability of key fisheries and the protection of vulnerable ecosystems. Aquaculture is included in this edition for the first time, described in terms of volume and socioeconomic indicators in chapter six. -

Activities and achievements 2022–2023

No results found.This booklet presents the activities and achievements of the BlackSea4Fish project over the 2022–2023 biennium. Established in 2016 and implemented by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, the BlackSea4Fish project contributes to the sustainable management of Black Sea fisheries by providing scientific and technical support to the countries in the region. From the beginning of 2022, BlackSea4Fish in-person meetings and joint field activities were able to gradually resume following the COVID-19 pandemic. The project focused on increasing scientific knowledge to support fisheries management by improving data collection and scientific advice for priority species through scientific surveys, enhanced stock assessments and capacity building. A total of 45 activities were launched over 2022 and 2023, including three data preparation meetings, eleven technical meetings and seven stakeholder meetings.
