The Red Palm Weevil (RPW, or Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is a major transboundary pest that originated in South Asia and is rapidly spreading around the world. FAO, with key international and national stakeholders, is promoting a national and regional programme for RPW management in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region. The programme facilitates the coordination of regional efforts to ensure an integrated and sustainable approach to controlling the RPW and reducing its devastating effects on date-palm production, the food and income security of rural communities, and the ecology of affected areas.

Red Palm Weevil: Guidelines on management practices 2020
    Also available in:

Since gaining a foothold on date palm in the Near East during the mid-1980s, the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier has spread rapidly over the last three decades and is now a major pest of palms in a diverse range of agroecosystems worldwide. In most of the countries affected, failure to manage RPW can be attributed to a lack of awareness about this pest and to lack of systematic and coordinated control actions or management strategies that involve all stakeholders. These guidelines have been developed by FAO to support all those involved in the day-to-day management of RPW in the field (including farmers and pest-management professionals), researchers, and the decision-makers and administrative stakeholders who support the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for RPW. Written by internationally recognized RPW experts, the guidelines describe the biology and host range of RPW and address all aspects of RPW-IPM, including surveillance, phytosanitary measures, early detection, pheromone trapping protocols, preventive and curative chemical treatments, removal and safe disposal of severely infested palms, and best agricultural practices to mitigate attacks by this lethal pest of palms.

First Announcement. Scientific Consultation and High-Level Meeting on Red Palm Weevil Management. 29-31 March, 2017. FAO, Rome, Italy 2017

Red Palm Weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus is one of the world’s major invasive pest species and is the single most destructive pest of some 40 palm species worldwide. It was detected in the Gulf region during the mid-eighties, and has significantly expanded westwards over the last three decades to cover almost all countries of the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region. It has also reached some Southern European countries in the Mediterranean Basin as well as a few countries in Central A merica and Caribbean. RPW has a significant socio-economic impact on the date palm production sector and the livelihoods of farmers in affected areas.
