    While insect consumption by humans or entomophagy has been traditionally practiced in various countries over generations and represents a common dietary component of various animal species (birds, fish, mammals), farming of insects for human food and animal feed is relatively recent. Production of this ‘mini-livestock’ brings with it several potential benefits and challenges. The objective of this document is to provide the reader with an overview of the various food safety issues that could be associated with edible insects. The intended audiences of this publication are food safety professionals, policymakers, researchers, insect producers as well as consumers. The regulatory frameworks that govern production, trade and consumption of insects in various regions are discussed. The document ends with elucidating some other major challenges, such as consumer acceptance and scaling up production, that the edible insect industry would need to overcome to have a more global reach.

    The percentage of the population of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic that regularly consumes insects is among the highest in the world. Most edible insects in Lao PDR are collected from wild habitats, and local people possess a rich body of traditional knowledge relating to harvesting practices, timing of collection and management of insect resources. Recently efforts have been made to introduce technologies for sustainable farming of selected insect species. This publication chronicles eff orts to enhance the contribution of edible insects to food security and improved nutrition in Lao PDR. It describes the most commonly consumed insects, details collecting and management practices, introduces the fledging insect farming sector, and presents experiences related to food safety, processing, handling, marketing and consumption of edible insects in Lao PDR.

    This book assesses the potential of insects as food and feed and gathers existing information and research on edible insects. The assessment is based on the most recent and complete data available from various sources and experts around the world. Insects as food and feed emerge as an especially relevant issue in the twenty-first century due to the rising cost of animal protein, food and feed insecurity, environmental pressures, population growth and increasing demand for protein among the middl e classes. Thus, alternative solutions to conventional livestock and feed sources urgently need to be found. The consumption of insects, or entomophagy , therefore contributes positively to the environment and to health and livelihoods. This publication grew from a small effort in 2003 in the FAO Forestry Department to document the role of insects in traditional livelihood practices in Central Africa and to assess the impact of harvesting insects in their natural habitats on the sustainability o f forests. This effort has since unfolded into a broad-based effort to examine the multiple dimensions of insect gathering and rearing to clarify the potential that insects offer for improving food security worldwide.     Protein is supplied by food ingredients, whole foods, sole-source foods and mixed diets and the match between dietary supply and human protein needs is vital to support the health and well-being of human populations. Since 1989 the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) method for evaluating protein quality has been used widely. However, limitations of PDCAAS have been recognised and new research and its application vis-à-vis other methods of estimating dietary protein quali ty. This report of the FAO Expert Consultation on Protein Quality Evaluation in Human Nutrition considers the effectiveness and concerns about the PDCAAS method for evaluating protein quality concerning the PDCAAS method. A new method of dietary quality evaluation called DIAAS is recommended for application in practice.

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.
