    This technology describes a combination of good practices for soil and water conservation that were introduced to coffee farmers in the central cattle corridor of Uganda, with aim to enhance their resilience to dry spells, pests and diseases, as part of the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) project on Agriculture Adaptation to Climate Change in Uganda. The concepts of mulching, trenches, organic compost and planting shade trees are briefly introduced. Additionally a cost-benefit analysis of the combination of the four good practices compared to normal practices are presented.

    The objective of this Soils Bulletin is to promote the use of locally available organic materials to increase soil organic matter content for improvement of soil fertility, and as a sources of plant nutrients in conjunction with mineral fertilizers. This manual is written for all those concerned with the maintenance and improvement of soil fertility, especially under tropical and subtropical conditions. It contains material for use in farmer training. The severe drought and famine in parts of Africa in 1985 have shown the necessity for adequate soil organic matter to prevent hillside erosion and to retain moisture in the soil for crop growth. The cost of mineral fertilizers and their relative scarcity in some areas has increased the need to recycle waste organic materials as sources of crop nutrients. This Bulletin explains the basic composting process, suitable organic wastes, practical composting methods, use of the product in a variety of situations and a consideration of econo mic and social benefits. It also deals with approaches to practical extension work with farmers on the subject.

    Livestock are an essential part of climate action on the ground in the agricultural sectors. Ninety-two developing countries have included livestock in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). More needs to be done as the livestock sector is growing rapidly. Livestock contribute 34% of global protein for human nutrition. But their contribution to food security and nutrition goes beyond this figure. They provide a diversity of essential micronutrients and many goods and services that are critical to livelihood of pastoralists and the majority of smallholders. Hundreds of millions of vulnerable people rely on livestock to cope with climate change. Emissions from livestock production can be substantially reduced by : • Improving efficiency in natural resource use to reduce emission intensity; • Increasing soil carbon in pastures and biomass by improving grazing management; • Reducing emissions by better integrating livestock into the circular (bio-) economy (e.g. by-products and wastes).

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.
