Synopsis (short abstract) The sixteenth session of the Subcommittee on Stock Assessment (SCSA) of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) was held at the GFCM headquarters in Rome, Italy, on 4–6 February 2015. The primary objectives of this meeting were: i) to review the status of the stocks in the Mediterranean and in the Black Sea (using information provided by the Subregional Group on Stock Assessment for the Black Sea [SGSABS; 13–14 November 2014, Constanta, Romania] and by the two Working Groups on Stock Assessment for Small Pelagic and Demersal species [WGSASP and WGSAD; 26-28 November 2014, Rome, Italy]); ii) to review the management advice to be proposed to the SAC for those stocks for which the assessment is considered reliable; and iii) to review methodological issues related to stock assessment and management advice.

    The sixteenth session of the Compliance Committee of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) was held in person on 5 May 2023 in Rhodes, Greece. The Committee reviewed the implementation of all intersessional activities carried out in the framework of the Committee and agreed on its 2023–2024 programme of work. The session addressed, among others, the overall status of compliance within the GFCM, the need for corrective actions that would support the GFCM to address non-compliance, the potential advice on compliance to be presented to the Commission at its next annual session and tools in place to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. La seizième session du Comité d'application de la Commission générale des pêches pour la Méditerranée (CGPM) s'est tenue en présentiel à Rhodes (Grèce) le 5 mai 2023. Le Comité a examiné les progrès accomplis dans la mise en œuvre des activités intersessions menées dans le cadre du Comité et est convenu de son programme de travail 2023-2024. Ont été abordés, entre autres, la situation générale de la conformité au sein de la CGPM, la nécessité de prendre des mesures correctives qui aideraient la CGPM à remédier aux cas de non-conformité, les avis potentiels sur la conformité à présenter à la Commission à sa prochaine session annuelle, et les outils utilisés pour décourager la pêche illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its sixteenth session in St. Julian’s, Malta, from 17 to 20 March 2014. The session was attended by 18 Contracting Parties, 7 observers, representatives of the FAO regional projects and the GFCM Secretariat. The Committee reviewed the issues addressed at 15 meetings held during the 2013–2014 intersession, including those of the four subcommittees and the Framework Programme (FWP). The ma in issues tackled included: i) scientific advice on the status of stocks, including proposals to improve the advice provided to the Commission; ii) analysis of research activities by Member Countries; iii) updates on the development of the GFCM Data Collection Reference Framework (DCRF); iv) updates on the development of management plans for Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries and v) follow-up activities addressing SAC priorities, such as indicators on the state of marine populations, small-sc ale fisheries and the fight against IUU. The Committee highlighted the importance of establishing a GFCM DCRF and submitted its proposal for the consideration of the Commission. Also, it launched the preparation of a concept note for a regional programme on small scale fisheries, and provided elements for the management of red coral and a number of selected fisheries for the consideration of the Commission. The achievements of the Working Group on the Black Sea, including through its Subregional Group on Stock Assessment for the Black Sea, were appraised. The SAC also agreed on a framework for providing advice and formulated a set of recommendations regarding its functioning. Finally, it agreed upon its work plan for 2014–2015 and elected a new Bureau, paying tribute to the work done by the immediate past members of the Bureau.

    This document is the final report of the sixteenth session of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF), held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, from 22 to 24 October 2002. The major topics discussed were: action on recommendations of the fifteenth session; poverty alleviation in fishing communities through the sustainable fisheries livelihoods approach; recommendations of the CECAF Scientific Sub- Committee; strengthening monitoring, control and surveillance in the region; review of CECAF terms of reference; and upgrading the Committee to a Commission level. The summary of the main decisions and recommendations is given in Appendix E.
