ArticleImpact of capacity building in leveraging community skills and livelihoods: lessons learned from social forestry in Indonesia

No results found.Indonesia encounters several challenges in forest management due to the high communities’ demand for forest resources, including the need for agricultural land within state-owned forest areas. Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) is a strategy that emphasizes on the importance of community’s involvement in forest conservation. CBFM planning has an important role in the implementation of effective and sustainable forest management through a participatory approach involving all parties in Planning, Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling. This paper aims to provide information on impact of capacity building in leveraging community skill and livehood in three schemes of Social Forestry (SF) in Indonesia, namely Paru Village Forest (VF)–West Sumatra, Cempaka Forestry Partnership (FP)–Lampung, and Tuar Tana Community Forestry (CF)–East Nusa Tenggara, in collaboration between Forestry and Environment Research, Development and Innovation Agency with the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO). The research was conducted through structured interviews, FGDs and field observations by an analysis unit while the informations obtained were analyzed through descriptively qualitative and quantitative methods. The results showed that the provided assistances and capacity building in three SF schemes have increased the active participation of group members in the preparation of technical plans and implementation of economic value species planting and processing of non-timber forest products (NTFPs).Other benefits are the reduced land boundary conflicts, an increase in the frequency of routine group meetings, an increase in the number of members who are able to process NTFPs into semi-finished or finished goods. This condition shows that the provided assistance is able to increase the capacity of farmers so as to change the perceptions and attitudes of group members and encourage them to actively participate in forest management in three SF area. ArticleForest-based bioeconomy pathways with emerging lignocellulosic products: A modeling approach

No results found.The forest-based sector plays an important role in a growing bioeconomy. Long-term resource availability and allocation will be a major challenge for the bioeconomy development. Therefore, this study aims to assess how forest product markets could develop in a growing bioeconomy and which interdependencies occur between traditional and emerging forest-based subsectors. Especially, the demand for wood-based textile fibres could dynamically grow over the next decades while there might be conflicting demand for wood resources from traditional subsectors. Thus, we include dissolving pulp, lignocellulose-based textile fibres and chemical derivatives in our modelling assessment. For this purpose, we extend the product structure of a partial equilibrium model, the Global Forest Products Model (GFPM). We use an econometric approach to compute demand and trade elasticities of the emerging products. We parameterize the extended model with these elasticities and analyze three different bioeconomy scenarios. In the first scenario, the demand for woody biomass remains similar to the current pattern. In the second scenario, the use of woody biomass increases primarily to satisfy growing input demand from the energy sector. In the third scenario, biomass is increasingly used as input to produce diverse industrial and everyday products. The simulation results show that, in the third scenario, where the world is changing toward a sustainable bioeconomy, wood consumption pattern shifts away from fuelwood (-30% by 2050) and paper products (-32% by 2050) towards emerging products. In this context, the dissolving pulp subsector could outpace the continuously shrinking paper pulp subsector in 2050. For this development, the dissolving pulp subsector mainly uses released resources from the decreasing paper pulp production. Simultaneously, wood-based panels are increasingly applied (+196% by 2050) while the growth of sawnwood remains limited. No results found.History suggests that not all countries follow the same forest sector development path, and not all development paths are equally desirable. Understanding heterogeneity in forest sector development is consequently vital to achieving green growth in forested landscapes, but empirical work on this subject is very scarce. In this paper, we combine a variety of global datasets to characterize both economic and ecological dimensions of development, and apply an unsupervised clustering algorithm to quantify similarities between nations. We interpret our result as a development typology, identifying four broad development paths. The heterogeneity we reveal argues strongly against the tacit assumption that forest sector development is a deterministic process culminating in a specific outcome (for example, moving ‘up the value chain’ via export-led industrialization). This heterogeneity has not previously been quantified, and our result provides an important first step towards an understanding of the nature and the causes of forest sector development outcomes. Beyond its contribution to the study of development, our result is of practical use for the comparative analysis of development plans and efforts to develop baseline scenarios for climate finance. Looking ahead, theoretical explanations for the current distribution of development outcomes must be sought to reframe thinking about forest sector development and guide policy initiatives.
