Phuket, Tailandia, 27 septiembre-1 octubre 2010 2010The fifth session of the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) was held in Phuket, Thailand, from 27 September to 1 October 2010 at the kind invitation of the Royal Thai Government. It was attended by 58 Members of FAO, and by observers from three intergovernmental and three international non-governmental organizations. The Sub-Committee appreciated the efforts of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department in responding to the recommendations of the past session of the Sub-Committee. Several working documents, including the Technical Guidelines on Aquaculture Certification, were presented by the Secretariat for information, discussion and decision by the Sub-Committee. The Secretariat also held a special event on the outcome of the Global Conference on Aquaculture 2010: Farming the Waters for People and Food. All documents presented and the activities conducted were well received. The Sub-Committee adopted the Technical Guidelines on Aquaculture Certificat ion for eventual endorsement by the twenty-ninth session of the COFI in early 2011. It requested the Secretariat to ensure the implementation of recommendations by the Sub-Committee at its fifth session during the intersessional period. The Sub-Committee expressed its appreciation to the Royal Thai Government and staff from the Thai Department of Fisheries for their hospitality and the excellent facilities provided for the session. The Sub-Committee agreed that its next session should be held in 2012 and appreciated the offer made by the Government of South Africa to host it.
