BookletHigh-profileFAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

Control of transboundary plant diseases and pests
2021Also available in:
No results found. This review focuses on building national and regional capacities for preventive control of transboundary plant pests and diseases, with cursory reference to large emergency outbreak control operations, including the current desert locust crisis response in the Horn of Africa and Southwest Asia. The rationale for focusing primarily on preventive control is the widely held view that the management of such threats is less costly and more cost-effective when tackled early on, when the threat is still small and manageable. National pest monitoring and control capacities, as well as regional and global collaboration, are key to success in a preventive, Early Warning Early Action (EWEA) approach to the management of transboundary pests and diseases. The review underscores how the control of transboundary pests and diseases is as much a governance issue as a technical one. Regional solidarity often determines the pace of progress, while political tensions, regional rivalries and conflicts tend to hamper regional collaboration on the desert locust and other species. The role of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in this context is to support a fair, collaborative and technically competent architecture of regional commissions and national entities that trust and help one another. FAO must continue to forge this trust, but it cannot be a substitute for national authorities, which also have their role to play. From the perspective of leaving no one behind, pests and diseases remind us that we all share the same planet and that we must cooperate beyond borders in order to succeed. -
