Synopsis (short abstract) The Global Action on the Green Development of Special Agricultural Products: One Country, One Priority Product (OCOP) is a five-year initiative launched by FAO in 2021, aimed at promoting agricultural products with distinct qualities that have the potential for sustainable development. The program seeks to enhance the value of these unique products at global, regional, and local levels, helping countries leverage their agricultural heritage while promoting environmentally friendly practices.In Latin America and the Caribbean, 14 countries have been selected to participate in the OCOP initiative. Each nation has chosen a specific agricultural product that reflects their unique cultural and environmental context. The goal is to support the green development of these products, ensuring they meet global sustainability standards and can contribute to the socio-economic development of the regions.This document addresses the situation in Mexico. The OCOP product is amaranth. This report emphasizes the significance of amaranth as a priority crop in Mexico, rooted in the country’s pre-Hispanic heritage and recognized as a superfood by the United Nations. Grown by small-scale farmers in central and southern regions, amaranth thrives in rain-fed systems and showcases resilience to drought, salinity, and high temperatures. With 3 213 hectares planted, and 5 721 tons produced in 2022, the crop holds immense potential for improving nutrition, fostering sustainable agriculture, and bolstering rural economies.Supported by FAO and Mexican institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Autonomous University of Chapingo, this initiative aims to enhance collaboration among stakeholders. By overcoming governance challenges and increasing the competitiveness of amaranth compared to other crops, the program seeks to unlock its potential as a sustainable and nutritious resource for local and global markets.

    The International Rice Commission (IRC), which works within the framework of FAO, was established on 4 January 1949 with the object of promoting national and international action in respect of production, conservation, distribution and consumption of rice. Matters relating to trade are outside the purview of the Commission. Membership of the Commission is open to all FAO Member Nations and Associate Members who accept the constitution of the IRC. The present membership of the Commission is 61 an d represents all the ricegrowing regions of the world. The Commission keeps under review the scientific, technical and economic problems relating to rice, encourages and coordinates research, organizes (where necessary) cooperative projects and reports to the member countries and the Director-General of FAO on appropriate action to be taken in furthering its objectives.

    This brief summarizes the results of a novel analysis that examines the determinants of adoption of agricultural practices to improve food security and their productivity implications in Tanzania. Conducted by the FAO Economics and Policy Innovations for Climate-Smart Agriculture Programme (EPIC), the approach integrates historical Climate data with a rich set of socio-economic data in a rigorous empirical analysis. The anlaysis creates evidence to support the efficient targeting of agricultural policies to improve food security under climate change.

    The recently released Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA 2000) was based on an intensive, five-year effort carried out by FAO in cooperation with national forestry agencies from nearly every country of the world, a large number of research centres and academic institutions, and a number of international, regional and non-governmental organizations.
