Book (series)Synopsis of biological data on the tor mahseer Tor tor (Hamilton, 1822). 2003
Also available in:
No results found.Among Indian mahseers, Tor mahseer Tor tor (Hamilton, 1822) is the most important food and game fish of India after Tor putitora (Hamilton, 1822). It constitutes an outstanding fishery in the Narmada River in central India. It has also settled in some Indian reservoirs which have been stocked with this fish. However, the building of dams across certain rivers has created reservoirs that have destroyed the natural breeding grounds of the fish and caused mortality of brood and juvenile fish indisc riminately. The mahseer fishery of India is further declining as a result of low recruitment of the fish. Stocking rivers and reservoirs with mahseer is therefore essential to restore the fishery. This synopsis is the compilation of biological data for Tor tor – Tor mahseer collected from different sources. The detailed biological information on Tor tor, including the feeding habits, breeding and growth patterns contained in this synopsis, will be useful in planning the development of the mahsee r fishery in India. -
No Thumbnail AvailableBook (series)Predicting ecology and fish yields in African reservoirs from preimpoundment physico-chemical data / Ecologie des réservoirs africains et leur rendement en poisson à partir de données psycho-chimiches réunies avant endiguement 1984
Also available in:
No results found. This paper attempts to improve the predictive capabilities of preimpoundment studies, with special emphasis on fish yields. It relies heavily on empirical models based on a relatively limited data base. It is hoped that the results will show that meaningful predictions can be made from simple, easily obtained data, a consideration especially important in an era of limited manpower and financial resources. The models described in this paper have not always been based on African data. Those that have been will be affected by the general inaccuracy of the original information, especially that regarding fish yields from African reservoirs. Nevertheless, if these limitations are borne in mind, the models may still be valuable and will have served their purpose if they stimulate others to use and improve them. An appendix has been included to illustrate the use of the models described in the text in an actual preimpoundment situation. -
Book (series)Freshwater small pelagic fish and their fisheries in the major African lakes and reservoirs in relation to food security and nutrition 2019
Also available in:
No results found.Small pelagic fish species found in lakes and introduced to reservoirs dominate by volume and contribute some of the most important inland fisheries in Africa with steadily increasing catches and additional potential. This circular reviews the status and importance of the pelagic fish and fisheries, together with small fish in general, for sustainable and healthy livelihoods in Africa. It reviews the biology and biological production of the most important pelagic species in lakes and reservoirs as well as the impacts of environmental and climatic variation on the stocks of these species. It examines and discuss the various capture techniques together with potential of improvements in the fisheries and associated processing and national and regional trade within Africa. The knowledge generated by the circular will be usefull for policy makers and development practitioners to design and implement more effective policies, strategies and programmes that will contribute to reducing the food insecurity and conflicts that currently affect the people in sub-Saharan Africa.
