ProjectWood Energy for Sustainable Development in The Western Balkans - TCP/RER/3502 2019
Also available in:
No results found. In the Western Balkan region, forests are a key source of renewable energy and wood energy is often essential for livelihoods in rural areas. However, the lack of national sector policies supporting the use of renewable energy sources contributes to an increased dependence on imported fossil fuels. The main objective of the project was thus to assess the potential of wood energy as an economically and environmentally sound alternative or complement to fossil fuels and to identify the zones most or least suitable for investments into wood energy projects. It would do this by developing a national Geographic Information System (GIS) database to enable the participating countries to make informed and evidence-based decisions on wood energy and forestry-related issues. This would assist in reaching national targets for the contribution of renewable energy sources to total final energy consumption by 2020. -
