    The method provides a potential indicator of the plant available copper, iron, manganese and zinc, which are essential soil micronutrients for plant growth and living organisms. It can be used to extract heavy metals such as nickel, lead and cadmium assisting with conclusions as to their potential bioavailability. This method must be used in combination with suitable determination methods, for example, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry.

    When the UN Statistical Commission agreed on the SDG monitoring framework, these indicators were classified as Tier III, as there was no harmonized methodology available to measure them. An international methodology for measuring them was proposed by FAO and member countries were consulted on this purpose. This working paper offers the statistical methodology for computing and monitoring target 2.3 and measure progress in SDG indicators 2.3.1 and 2.3.2 approved by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on the Sustainable Development Goals (IAEG-SDG) in September 2018.
