Synopsis (short abstract) The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is facing a socioeconomic crisis that continues to drive food insecurity, leaving 4.4 million people in rural and disaster-prone areas in need of food assistance. The state of Zulia is among the hardest hit by this complex humanitarian emergency, and the current La Niña cycle could make the situation worse. To mitigate these effects, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to implement anticipatory actions that will benefit 1 667 households (7 786 people).

    La Niña significantly impacts the Asia-Pacific region, leading to above‑average rainfall that often results in severe flooding and cyclones, which damage agricultural and food systems. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Viet Nam and Fiji in particular are at high risk during the current La Niña cycle. To mitigate these effects, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO through SFERA – Anticipatory Action window, to support over 5 900 families in high-risk areas in these three countries.

    Colombia is currently transitioning from the El Niño phenomenon to La Niña, which brings significant climate challenges such as heavy rainfall, floods and landslides, putting over 9.3 million people at risk. To mitigate these effects, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 600 000 to FAO to implement anticipatory actions to protect the livelihoods of over 6 730 vulnerable farming families as well as 15 000 livestock.

    In a general economic context marked by high levels of poverty, Madagascar is particularly vulnerable to hazards that impact agricultural activities, which constitute the population’s main livelihoods. Since 2015, the southern part of the island has been plagued by prolonged episodes of drought, which were exacerbated by the occurence of compounding hazards such as sand-laden winds and attacks by crop pests (locusts, fall armyworms and other insects harmful to vegetable crops). Emergency responses have been implemented by actors in the most affected areas. This has partially improved the livelihoods of the households benefiting from these interventions, but the vulnerability of the population persists. The Government of the Kingdom of Belgium has contributed USD 1 million, through SFERA, to FAO’s Anticipatory Action in the south of Madagascar. Thanks to this generous contribution, FAO will provide 4 500 vulnerable households with support for livestock breeding, seed distribution, fishing equipment and cash distribution, as well as training, to help safeguard the food security and livelihoods of the most vulnerable rural households in the country.
