Book (series)Technical studyFinal evaluation of the project "Strengthening resilience to climate change through integrated agricultural and pastoral management in the Sahelian zone in the framework of Mali's sustainable land management approach
Project code: GCP/MLI/038/LDF GEF ID: 4822
2020Also available in:
Mali is currently facing many challenges due to climate change that is significantly affecting all communities in the country, and agricultural producers in particular. In order to meet these climate challenges, the project aimed at building the capacities of agro-pastoralists in the Banamba, Kita and Niono districts to help them cope with climate change. With the exception of gender, the project strategy is sound and it reached the objective to boost the capacity of Mali's agro-pastoral activities to cope with climate change. A functional interactive community chat created by the project, as well as the Village Savings and Loan Associations set-up, are some of the elements that strengthen the resilience of agro-pastoralists and render project achievements more sustainable. -
Book (series)Evaluation reportTerminal evaluation of the project "Integrated Land and Agroecosystem Management Systems (ILAMS) for Tonga"
Project code: GCP/TON/001/GFF - GEF ID 5578
2023Also available in:
No results found.Regulatory and policy frameworks in Tonga do not adequately support land use planning and management. Land use planning capacities and tenure conditions for sustainable land management, and capacities for the support and implementation of sustainable land management practices are not adequate. To tackle these challenges, the Government of Tonga, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have joined efforts to sustainably increase and improve provision of goods and services from agriculture through integrated land and agroecosystem management in Tonga. The final beneficiaries interviewed by the evaluation have been well engaged in the communal nurseries and medicinal plants preservation activities, which were considered useful for preservation of forest, biodiversity and enhancement of quality of soil. The enclosed piggeries model introduced by the project was overall accepted, but some of its elements (such as feeding and breeding), as well as its cultural appropriateness, deserve further attention. To improve the enabling environment for land management, the project also developed Policy Intention Papers and a Land Use Policy document, but there were questions regarding their endorsement and incorporation by the Tongan Government. -

Book (stand-alone)Technical bookClimate change and food security: risks and responses 2015
Also available in:
End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition are at the heart of the sustainable development goals. The World has committed to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. But climate change is undermining the livelihoods and food security of the rural poor, who constitute almost 80 percent of the world’s poor. The effects of climate change on our ecosystems are already severe and widespread. Climate change brings a cascade of impacts from agroecosystems to livelihoods. Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all.
