Synopsis (short abstract) Knowledge is only effective when it is shared and made available to the broadest possible range of people. This is especially true when aiming at effectively combating worldwide hunger and malnutrition which multidimensional causes require being always well informed on a wide range variety of subjects and trends and to be able to join the international discourse. With this in mind the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition was launched in 2007 to bring together academics, rese archer and development practitioners for facilitated online discussion and knowledge sharing. This publication aims at exploring the Forum’s activities, to provide a taste of what is happening within the Forum and, most importantly, of what can happen beyond it. It was prepared with the generous support of the project “Coherent Food Security Responses: Incorporating Right to Food into Global and Regional Food Security Initiatives” funded by the Spanish Agency for International Develo pment Cooperation (AECID).

    There is increasing attention to the importance of biodiversity for food security and nutrition, especially above-ground biodiversity such as plants and animals. However, less attention is being paid to the biodiversity beneath our feet, soil biodiversity, which drives many processes that produce food or purify soil and water. This report is the result of an inclusive process involving more than 300 scientists from around the world under the auspices of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and its Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, and the European Commission. It presents concisely the state of knowledge on soil biodiversity, the threats to it, and the solutions that soil biodiversity can provide to problems in different fields. It also represents a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity and highlighting its role in finding solutions to today's global threats.

    Volume II of the proceedings on the above theme, which was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 11 to 14 February 2003. The three primary objectives of the symposium were to provide a forum (i) to review and synthesize the latest information on large rivers; (ii) to raise the political, public and scientific awareness of the importance of river systems, the living aquatic resources they support and the people that depend on them; and (iii) to contribute to better management, conservation and restor ation of the living aquatic resources of large rivers. Over 220 river scientists and managers from around the world attended the symposium. Selected papers appearing in the proceedings represent 96 rivers from 61 river basins from all continents and climatic zones.
