Synopsis (short abstract) Blue Growth promotes the sustainable development of aquatic resources for the benefit of communities who rely on them for their livelihoods and food security. It seeks to maximize economic and social benefits while minimizing environmental degradation from activities within the fisheries and aquaculture sector. These goals are closely aligned with the three pillars of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which pay special attention to traditionally marginalized groups. Analysing the needs and interests of women, youth, indigenous peoples and migrants is central to the Blue Growth approach. An approach that prioritizes working with governments, communities and civil society to advance policies and incentives that unlock the economic and social potential of marginalized groups and empower them to safeguard natural resources while enhancing opportunities to access decent work.

    The world is not on track in making the pledge of leaving no one behind a reality, particularly in rural areas where most of the extreme poor live. Rural people in low-income countries increasingly face structural constraints in seizing socio-economic and political opportunities. In addition, gender discriminatory social norms prevent rural women and girls from realizing their full potential as leaders and economic agents, constraining the livelihoods and well-being of entire rural societies. In this context, development and humanitarian actors tend to overlook the use of community engagement and gender-transformative approaches, despite the fact that these are cost effective and have high returns. Considering these pressing challenges, it is of paramount importance to promote collective action at community level – ensuring ownership and sustainability – to trigger transformative changes in terms of gender equality, women’s leadership and social inclusion.

    Sustainable Development Goal 1, ending poverty in all its forms, everywhere, is the most ambitious goal set by the 2030 Agenda. This Goal includes eradicating extreme poverty in the next 12 years, which will require more focused actions in addition to broad-based interventions. The question is: How can we achieve target 1.1 and overcome the many challenges that lie ahead? By gaining a deeper understanding of poverty, and the characteristics of the extreme rural poor in particular, the right policies can be put in place to reach those most in need. This report presents the contribution that agriculture, food systems and the sustainable use of natural resources can make to securing the livelihoods of the millions of poor people who struggle in our world.

    Empowering Africa's rural women for Zero Hunger and shared prosperity

    This brochure presents the key findings and recommendations of the study entitled “the Regional Outlook on Gender and Agri-food Systems,” which was jointly conducted by the FAO and the African Union Commission. The brochure describes gender gaps in (i) access to and control over productive resources and opportunities, (ii) influence and collective capacity, and (iii) agricultural policies, investment and rural context. Additional analysis on progress and good practices across countries in Africa informed the brochure further to provide recommendations and next steps to move from commitments to collective actions.
