Synopsis (short abstract) Agriculture in India is extremely diverse among regions in terms of climate, soils, growing season and cropping patterns, and is dependent upon rain. The rainfed agricultural system prevails in 52 percent of the country's net sown area, contributing nearly 40 percent of the total food production and supporting about two thirds of the livestock population. Moreover, small and marginal farmers constitute more than 86 percent of the total farmers in the country, with less than 50 percent of the land under cultivation. Currently, seasonal climate variability is a key factor in defining agricultural performance, considering that rainfed areas are extremely vulnerable to climate change due to their poor capacity to cope with extreme water and weather shocks. Even though the government developed some support strategies and agencies, such as the Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC) to apply space and geospatial technology in various aspects of agriculture and support the farmers’ resilience, poor market linkages and infrastructure constraints contribute to undermining farmers’ incomes and economic resilience. Additionally, the lack of weather consultants and proper soil testing resources have hindered the effective management of agriculture, while the absence of extension services in villages has deprived farmers of crucial support, emphasizing the existing gaps and deficiencies.

    Between 2015 and 2016 South Africa faced some of the worst droughts to have hit the country in decades These droughts were induced by El Niño, a climate pattern that results in the warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, in turn causing a decrease in water availability in the form of rain and discharge into rivers An estimated 6 291 900 people across South Africa are estimated to have been affected by this drought More specifically, smallholder farmers, who are dependent upon agriculture for their livelihoods, and individuals with lower socio economic status were most vulnerable to the adverse effects of the droughts Furthermore, the production of maize and livestock was significantly impacted, with the decrease in production resulting in rising food costs.

    The majority of the population of Malawi depends on rainfed smallholder agriculture The country is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and climatic shocks, which are increasing in intensity, frequency and unpredictability, making climate resilience ever more vital to safeguard its development gains and secure a more prosperous future Agriculture plays an important role in the economy and vital for the livelihoods of most Malawians, including for national food self sufficiency and household food and nutrition security The agricultural sector is dominated by crops, while other sub sectors, such as livestock and fisheries, are comparatively small and their share of employment is much higher than their contribution to gross domestic product These are an important source of food and nutrition policy The project focused on responding to the severe weather system formed off the eastern coast of Mozambique, which affected Malawi with heavy rain and strong winds and eventually intensified into Cyclone Idai which struck Malawi a second time Floods not only devastated infrastructure for agricultural production (such as land and drainage systems), but also crops and livestock rearing and productive infrastructure, which was partially or totally destroyed Most farmers reported total or partial loss of crops, death of animals and pest and disease outbreaks The consequences for the country were disastrous, causing mass displacement of people and affecting 15 districts and 2 cities.

    Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about half the population in India, which is also one of the main producers of milk, legumes, jute, rice, wheat and cotton. Due to soil erosion, burning of crop residues and a high use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it is essential to transition to sustainability to increase agricultural productivity and enhance both food and ecological security in the country. Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh depends mostly on rainfall, so the monsoon and seasonal conditions play a crucial role and have been highly affected by climate change, leading the State of Andhra Pradesh, as many others in India, to experience soil degradation, yield reductions and seasonal yield gaps, which have increased the costs of production. Furthermore, other safety concerns such as the COVID 19 pandemic affected agricultural value chains, giving rise to the need to modernize the agricultural sector with technologies and marketing strategies that will lead to profitable and sustainable production systems. To address these challenges, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (state government) launched farmer facilitation centres (FFCs) as an efficient platform to disseminate knowledge and provide farmers with services and assistance to improve year-round productivity, profitability and sustainability.
