Synopsis (short abstract) A Workshop on Deep-sea Species Identification was organized by FAO in Rome, Italy, from 2 to 4 December, 2009. The meeting was organized in response to the need for a strategy for the development of appropriate deep-sea species identification tools for fishery purposes, in particular, to address the broadened requirements for reporting on not only target species, but also associated species following recent international developments with respect to fisheries management guidance and biodiversity conservation. The Workshop included an overview of relevant FAO programmes, followed by presentations and discussions on current knowledge and key issues to be addressed to improve knowledge of vulnerable deep-sea species groups such as chondrichthyes, corals, sponges and other selected deep-sea groups through the development of a database and appropriate identification tools to facilitate reporting on these species groups by fishery operators. Part 1 of the report includes these discussions as well as the conclusions and recommendations agreed upon by participants. Harmonised versions of the three background documents drafted for the Workshop are included in Part 2 of the report.

    The regional workshop on the “Development of Species Identification Guides for Deep-sea Cartilaginous Fishes of the Indian Ocean” was held in Flic en Flac, Mauritius, from 16 to 18 January 2013. It was attended by 15 participants from a wide range of countries and fields of expertise, including taxonomy, bioecology of cartilaginous fishes and the fishing industry. The general objective of the workshop was to discuss, share experiences and finally draft recommendations for the development of fiel d products aimed at facilitating the identification of Indian Ocean deep-sea cartilaginous fishes. The key goals were: to draft the final list of species to be included in the field product (or products); to define the format of the field product and how the species should be depicted; to agree on which information for each species should be included; to define the best way to help the user avoid confusing the species with similar ones; and finally to draft a proposal for the training of fishers and fishery observers to be carried out on board fishing vessels operating in the Indian Ocean.

    This poster includes a selection of important deep-sea coral taxa known to occur in the Mediterranean Sea. Each taxon is described using on-deck, laboratory or underwater photos, and information on their morphology, characteristics, texture, important identification characters, colour, size and depth of occurrence are also provided. A section on similar looking invertebrates is also included. The objective of this poster is to assist fishers and fishery observers in the identification of these poorly known species at sea. It is also aimed at generating awareness and understanding of these deep-sea vunerable organisms.

    The regional workshop on the “Identification of Deep-sea Cartilaginous fishes of the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean” was held at the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Cape Town, South Africa, from 23 to 26 June 2015. It was attended by 15 participants from a wide range of countries and fields of expertise, including taxonomy and bio-ecology of cartilaginous fishes. The general objective of the workshop was to improve the capabilities of scientists from countries facing the South an d Central Eastern Atlantic Ocean in the identification of a range of deep-sea cartilaginous fish species caught in the region. The participants were introduced to the anatomical features and taxonomy of the orders of deep-sea cartilaginous fishes occurring in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean, to the use of the taxonomic keys included in the reference text material (e.g. FAO Catalogues and Identification Guide) and to the methodologies of processing and identifying a selection of specimens. Moreov er, a biological data collection protocol was illustrated thus allowing for better reporting of shark specimens.
