Synopsis (short abstract) Le présent document est le rapport de la Consultation d'experts sur le projet de création d'un sous-comité de l'aquaculture du Comité des pêches, demandée par le COFI à sa vingt-troisième session et qui s'est déroulée les 28 et 29 février 2000 auprès du Bureau régional de la FAO pour l'Asie et le Pacifique, à Bangkok (Thaïlande). La Consultation a rassemblé 33 participants de 14 pays, de deux organisations intergouvernementales régionales et de deux organisations non gouvernementales internation ales. Elle a confirmé que l'importance croissante de l'aquaculture, y compris de la pêche fondée sur l'élevage, et ses interactions justifiaient la création d'un mécanisme intergouvernemental ciblé de portée mondiale, offrant aux parties intéressées par le développement de l'aquaculture un forum d'échange d'informations, de discussion et de concertation, et constituant un instrument efficace pour la fourniture de conseils et d'orientations au COFI et à la FAO. La Consultation a conclu que l'étab lissement d'un tel sous-comité serait conforme à la Résolution 13/97 de la Conférence de la FAO et l'utilisation de fonds pour ce sous-comité justifiée. La Consultation a dégagé les principaux enjeux et indiqué les six domaines prioritaires à examiner, soulignant le rôle fondamental de l'aquaculture pour le renforcement de la sécurité alimentaire et du développement économique dans les pays membres de la FAO.

    This is the report of the Expert Consultation on the Proposed Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the Committee on Fisheries, which was held, in response to the request by the 23rd Session of COFI, in FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, from 28 to 29 February 2000. Thirty-three participants from 14 countries, two regional inter-governmental organizations and two international non-governmental organizations attended the consultation. The expert consultation confirmed th at the growing importance of aquaculture, including culture-based fisheries, and its interactions justified a focused global intergovernmental mechanism to provide the opportunity for information exchange, discussion and consensus-building among various parties interested in aquaculture development and to establish an efficient means to advise and guide COFI and FAO. The consultation concluded that the establishment of such a sub-committee would be in line with the FAO Conference Resolution 13/9 7 and the expenditure of funds on the sub-committee would be justified. The consultation identified major issues and prioritized six key areas that need to be addressed and stated that the role of aquaculture for enhancing food security and economic development in FAO member countries was a primary priority.
