In this paper techniques developed for artificial reproduction of Bagre Negro (Rhamdia sapo) are described. Corionic gonadotrophin was used for the hormonal induction. The relationship between water temperature and the induction period (latent period) while using artificial insemination (stripping) was verified and is described. For the first time, natural spawning in aquarium was tested and used, with promissing results. The relationship between water temperature and the incubation period w as also established. The highest percentage of positive responses to hormonal induction of the females, was obtained in the month of October. During the study period a decreasing volume of the eggs and consequently of the larvae size at hatching was observed. The relationship between egg and larval size was determined. It is concluded that the developed techniques will allow the production of catfish larvae at a large scale.

Experiments carried out to determine the possibilities and techniques of induced spawning, artificial insemination and incubation of the Bagre Negro (Rhamdia sapo), in order to allow the production of fish seed at an industrial scale, are described. Bagre Negro pituitary extract, corionic gonadotrophin and DOCA were used for induction of ovulation. Ovulation was achieved with the former two, and no response was obtained with DOCA. A maximum of 112,500 eggs per kg were produced in October. It was determined that the latent period is function of the water temperature according to the equation L. Period = 7638,24 × T°C -1,92. The eggs obtained were fertilized by the dry method and incubated in Chase jars, and in plastic mesh baskets suspended in aquaria with flowing water. Larvae showed very low mortality up to the moment of total yolk sac absortion.
